Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Gas South’s forward-thinking Information Technology Office as a Software Engineering Intern and spend your summer (or semester) turning real customer problems into elegant, production-ready code. You’ll be embedded in a nimble, cross-functional squad that owns everything from the first line of code to the final deploy, giving you a 360° view of how modern software is built, tested, and shipped at one of the Southeast’s fastest-growing energy retailers.
- • From day one you will pair with senior engineers to map the full technology stack—C# .NET micro-services running in Azure Kubernetes Service, React front ends, SQL Server and Cosmos DB data layers, and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines. Instead of shadowing, you’ll be given a small but business-critical feature to own end-to-end, such as exposing a new REST endpoint for usage-analytics or adding a real-time notification panel to the customer portal. You’ll write unit and integration tests, open pull requests, and defend your design decisions in daily stand-ups.
- • You’ll gain hands-on exposure to our rigorous QA environment: spinning up ephemeral test namespaces, seeding data with synthetic customer profiles, and executing regression suites in Cypress and Postman. When a test fails, you’ll dig into logs in Azure Monitor, reproduce locally with Docker Compose, and push a fix before the next release window. By the end of your internship you’ll have a deep understanding of blue-green deploys, feature flags, and how observability drives reliability.
- • Expect to spend roughly 60 % of your time coding, 20 % testing and debugging, and 20 % collaborating with product managers, UX designers, and DevOps. You’ll participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retros—learning how user stories are broken down, how we estimate complexity with story points, and how we balance tech debt against new features. Your voice matters: interns have successfully influenced the roadmap by surfacing edge-case bugs and proposing performance optimizations.
- • We’ll ask you to document what you build. Whether it’s updating our internal wiki with sequence diagrams or recording a five-minute Loom demo for the support team, clear communication is part of the job. You’ll also present your project to the entire IT organization during Demo Day; past interns have showcased everything from a Slack bot that surfaces deployment metrics to a cost-optimization dashboard that saved six figures annually.
- • Mentorship is baked into the culture. You’ll have a dedicated staff-level engineer as your mentor, weekly 1:1s with the VP of Engineering, and access to an intern alumni network that now spans Google, Microsoft, and Stripe. We set measurable learning goals—e.g., “ship code to prod within 10 days” or “reduce average API latency by 15 %”—and give you the autonomy to hit them.
- • Beyond the code, you’ll see how software drives business outcomes. Gas South serves 425 k+ residential and commercial customers; every optimization you make ripples out to lower bills and greener energy choices. You’ll sit in on customer-journey mapping sessions, hear from our sustainability team, and understand how regulatory changes translate into backlog items.
- • The internship is fully remote, but we foster connection through virtual coffee chats, monthly in-person hack-days in Atlanta (expenses paid), and an intern-only Slack channel that’s as active at 10 p.m. as it is at 10 a.m. We’ll ship you a loaded MacBook Pro, ultra-wide monitor, and noise-canceling headset so your home setup matches our office standards.
- • By the end of the program you’ll have at least one feature running in production, a portfolio-ready case study, and a letter of recommendation signed by your mentor and the CTO. Roughly 40 % of our interns return for a second rotation or convert to full-time offers before graduation.
🎯 Requirements
- • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related STEM field with an expected graduation date between December 2025 and May 2027
- • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one modern object-oriented or functional language (C#, Java, Python, Go, or TypeScript) through coursework, personal projects, open-source contributions, or prior internships
- • Working knowledge of Git version control and familiarity with collaborative workflows such as pull requests, code reviews, and branching strategies
- • Nice-to-have: exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), or automated testing frameworks (xUnit, Jest, Cypress)
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive hourly wage of $28–$35, commensurate with experience and academic level
- • 100 % remote-first schedule with flexible hours and a one-time $1,000 home-office stipend
- • All-expense-paid trips to Atlanta for orientation, mid-term hack-day, and farewell celebration—including hotel, meals, and team-building activities
- • Full access to Gas South’s learning platform (Pluralsight, O’Reilly, Azure certifications) and a $500 annual professional-development budget you can spend on conferences, books, or courses
