• This is a unique opportunity to join Kraken's dynamic Data organization and take ownership of the Machine Learning platforms and systems that power our entire company. You will be instrumental in enabling numerous product and engineering teams to build, deploy, and reliably operate ML models in production environments. Your work will directly impact critical areas such as fraud detection, risk management, personalization, and recommendation engines, driving significant improvements in scalability and efficiency.
• You will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, tackling broad and complex problem spaces, and providing technical clarity in environments that are often ambiguous. This role demands a leader who can influence technical direction, mentor other engineers, and foster a culture of deep technical expertise, strong ownership, and continuous improvement.
• Key responsibilities include setting the long-term technical strategy for Kraken's AI ML initiatives, influencing multiple teams and projects. You will own the architecture and ongoing evolution of our core AI ML systems, encompassing the entire model lifecycle from training and feature management to serving, experimentation, and monitoring.
• You will lead cross-team efforts to establish and standardize robust ML development and operational practices across the organization, ensuring consistency and high quality. A significant part of your role will involve driving the design and delivery of complex, high-impact ML systems that address critical business needs.
• Collaboration is key. You will partner closely with senior engineering, product, and data leaders to identify strategic opportunities where ML can unlock step-change improvements in scalability and efficiency. This involves translating business challenges into technical ML solutions and advocating for best practices.
• The role requires a balance between hands-on technical contributions and architectural leadership. You will be responsible for conducting design reviews, providing technical guidance, and ensuring the technical integrity of our ML infrastructure.
• A crucial aspect of this position is evaluating emerging ML and Generative AI technologies. You will be tasked with identifying and leading the adoption of these technologies when they offer durable, platform-level value, ensuring Kraken remains at the cutting edge of AI innovation.
• Mentorship is highly valued. You will mentor Staff and Senior engineers, actively shaping our technical culture and elevating the overall quality and maturity of ML engineering practices at Kraken. This includes sharing knowledge, fostering best practices, and developing the next generation of ML leaders within the company.

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale production Machine Learning systems.
• Proven track record of owning ML platforms or infrastructure utilized by multiple teams or products.
• Strong system design skills, with experience making long-term architectural tradeoffs in complex environments.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and strong experience with at least one additional language such as Scala, Go, or Rust.
• Deep hands-on experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) and model lifecycle management.
• Extensive experience with MLOps practices, including experimentation frameworks, CI/CD, model monitoring, and reliability.
• Strong background in data-intensive and distributed systems (e.g., Spark, object storage, large-scale batch and streaming).
• Demonstrated ability to lead through influence, mentor senior engineers, and communicate technical strategy to diverse stakeholders.
