📋 Description

• As a Staff AI Engineer in Applied AI at Rula Health, you will lead high-impact AI initiatives that directly advance the company’s mission to destigmatize mental health care and deliver evidence-based, compassionate support at scale. Your work will shape how AI enhances clinical decision-making, improves patient outcomes, and ensures ethical, reliable deployment of intelligent systems in a regulated healthcare environment.
• You will own the end-to-end technical direction for AI products — from conceptualizing foundation model applications and designing evaluation pipelines to deploying and monitoring systems in production. This includes leading cross-functional collaboration with product, clinical, and engineering teams to translate ambitious AI visions into robust, scalable, and compliant solutions that serve both providers and patients.
• You will drive excellence in AI engineering practices by establishing best practices for LLM integration (including RAG, tool use, agents, and memory systems), selecting and optimizing vector databases, and implementing rigorous observability and AIOps frameworks to ensure continuous model improvement and alignment with clinical accuracy, fairness, and safety standards.
• You will mentor and elevate the technical bar across the AI engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, rigor, and accountability. Your influence will extend beyond code to shaping hiring, process, and architectural decisions as Rula scales its AI capabilities from early-stage experimentation to enterprise-grade production systems.
• You will gain deep expertise in applying cutting-edge generative AI to real-world mental health challenges, including HIPAA-compliant deployment, clinical decision support integration, and human-in-the-loop systems. • You will help define the future of AI at Rula by contributing to open-source knowledge, influencing early team growth (0→1), and setting standards for secure, scalable, and ethical AI development in a mission-driven, remote-first organization committed to equity and inclusion in mental healthcare.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of AI/ML development with proven success in productizing AI solutions (not just academic/research), including end-to-end experience in model design, training/fine-tuning, deployment, and ongoing quality maintenance in production environments.
• 5+ years of deep Python proficiency and 2+ years of hands-on experience with at least one backend language (JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, or Go) for building scalable AI-integrated systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in foundation models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Bedrock, Gemini, etc.) and advanced LLM integration patterns such as RAG, tool/function calling, agents, memory routing, and AI orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, DSPy, Haystack).
• Proven experience designing and implementing evaluation pipelines for human alignment, factual accuracy, interpretability, and bias mitigation in AI systems, particularly in high-stakes domains.
• Strong background in AIOps, data pipelines, observability, and continuous model improvement systems, including experience with vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, FAISS, Milvus) and MLOps practices for LLMs.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
