Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Staff Analytics Engineer at Kin Insurance, you will serve as the technical anchor for an analytics engineering team, owning ontology design, semantic modeling, and the foundational patterns your team builds on to ensure data is correct, durable, and trusted across the organization.
- • Day to day, you will own the hardest modeling and architecture in your team’s scope—designing ontology objects (types, properties, link types, actions) and dimensional/semantic models (e.g., Looker/LookML), act as a technical thought partner to product and business leaders by translating ambiguous needs into clear technical plans, drive end-to-end ownership of business-critical initiatives, align models with shared core entities (customer, policy, claim), define team-wide modeling patterns and reference implementations, partner with domain data engineers on data contracts and pipelines, and raise the technical bar through mentorship, design reviews, and AI tool integration (Claude, Claude Code, Databricks Genie).
- • Kin is a remote-first, mission-driven company making homeowners insurance simpler, more affordable, and better—especially in climate-vulnerable and underserved areas. Founded in 2016, Kin serves customers in 14+ states, operates with disciplined growth and strong unit economics, and is recognized as a top workplace by Built In Chicago, Forbes, Inc. 5000, and Great Places to Work. The company values ownership, curiosity, lean operations, and teamwork, fostering a culture where people do meaningful work with real impact.
- • In this role, you will achieve deep technical influence without formal authority, solve the most complex modeling problems in your domain, establish durable and trusted data models that reduce bottlenecks for your team, mentor peers, contribute to organizational standards, and help Kin advance its data mesh and AI-ready data infrastructure—leaving a lasting impact on how data serves the business and its customers.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years in analytics engineering, BI engineering, or data modeling roles with a track record of being the technical anchor on complex, cross-cutting data work
- • Deep expertise in semantic and data modeling, including judgment on when to use ontology-driven, dimensional, or hybrid models
- • Hands-on experience with an ontology or object-based semantic layer (e.g., Palantir Foundry Ontology) or strong transferable modeling experience
- • Fluency in dimensional modeling for BI consumption (e.g., Looker/LookML) downstream of a source-of-truth model
- • Experience with data mesh, data-as-a-product, and domain-oriented architecture—or strong conviction about federated data ownership
- • Experience with modern lakehouse platforms (e.g., Databricks) operated as a shared, self-serve data platform
- • Demonstrated technical leadership and influence without formal authority through credibility, clarity, and example
- • Strong written and verbal communication, especially when navigating ambiguity, tradeoffs, or disagreement
- • Comfort applying Claude, Claude Code, and Databricks-native AI tools in day-to-day analytics engineering work
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary and company equity through Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)
- • 401(k) with company match up to 4% of eligible earnings
- • Multiple medical plan options, plus dental and vision coverage
- • Company-funded HSA contributions (based on medical plan selection)
- • Company-paid life insurance and short-term disability
- • Access to mental health support and confidential counseling resources
- • Flexible PTO for exempt employees (15–20 days/year) plus 8 company-observed holidays
- • Paid parental leave: up to 14 weeks at 100% pay for birthing parents, 8 weeks for non-birthing parents
- • Professional development budgets for certifications, conferences, and learning (subject to management approval)
- • Career mobility and internal growth opportunities across the organization
