📋 Description

• As a Staff Backend Engineer at Apaleo GmbH, you will be instrumental in architecting, developing, and scaling the core backend systems that power the world's most open, API-first property management platform. This is a pivotal role where you will not only contribute to the technical direction but also mentor other engineers and champion best practices, ensuring the robustness, reliability, and maintainability of our cutting-edge hospitality technology.

This includes exploring how AI can optimize workflows, personalize stays, and drive efficiency across the hospitality sector.
• Your responsibilities will extend to designing and evolving our distributed systems within a cloud-native environment, with a strong emphasis on AWS. This involves building and maintaining the infrastructure, utilizing tools like Terraform, to empower development teams to deliver features faster and with greater reliability.
• A key aspect of this role is ensuring the high availability and performance of our platform. You will achieve this by implementing and advocating for best practices in observability, logging, monitoring, and operational excellence. This proactive approach is crucial for maintaining a seamless experience for our hotelier clients.
• You will play a critical role in technical leadership, championing architectural decisions and leading design discussions. Your focus will be on the long-term impact of these decisions, ensuring alignment across different engineering teams and fostering a culture of technical excellence through collaborative problem-solving and knowledge sharing.
• Mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level engineers is a significant part of this position. You will share your expertise, provide constructive feedback, and help foster their technical growth, contributing to a high-performing and collaborative engineering team.
• You will be expected to participate in on-call rotations, acting as a reliable problem solver during critical incidents. This requires a calm demeanor under pressure and the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring minimal disruption to our clients.
• The role involves a deep dive into event-driven architectures and streaming technologies, with experience in Kafka being a valuable asset. Understanding and implementing these patterns will be key to building scalable and responsive systems.
• You will be a key contributor to our internal tools and infrastructure development, ensuring that our development and deployment processes are efficient, secure, and scalable. This includes leveraging infrastructure-as-code principles to manage our AWS environment effectively.
• Your work will directly impact the evolution of our AI-powered infrastructure, enabling hoteliers to customize their tech stacks, automate routine tasks, and provide personalized guest experiences. You will be a driving force in how we integrate AI and autonomous agents into our platform.
• We encourage a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, where you can effectively balance building custom solutions with leveraging existing AI tools and services to achieve optimal outcomes. This requires a keen understanding of trade-offs and a focus on delivering business value.

• You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions. Your ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders will be essential.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in backend development, with several years in a staff-level or technical leadership role.
• Expert-level knowledge of C# (.NET 8+) and strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL (or solid SQL chops).
• Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments (preferably AWS).
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, ChatGPT, Amazon CodeWhisperer) to boost productivity, solve complex bugs, or auto-generate boilerplate code and documentation.
• A growth mindset and constant curiosity about how AI and automation can accelerate development, improve quality, and reduce toil.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, you’re able to clearly articulate your ideas, especially when introducing new tech like AI to cross-functional teams.
