đź“‹ Description
- • As a Staff Mobile Engineer specializing in Instrumentation SDKs for Observability at Grafana Labs, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of mobile application monitoring. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-impact, open-source project that is used by millions worldwide, enabling them to gain deep insights into their applications and infrastructure.
- • You will be instrumental in building and evolving sophisticated mobile instrumentation SDKs for both iOS (Swift/Objective-C) and Android (Kotlin/Java) platforms. The primary focus will be on delivering exceptional performance, unwavering stability, and a seamless developer experience for users of these SDKs.
- • Your responsibilities will encompass the design and implementation of critical SDK features. This includes, but is not limited to, advanced session tracking capabilities, robust crash reporting mechanisms, intelligent sampling strategies to optimize data collection, automatic context propagation for enhanced tracing, and seamless integrations with the OpenTelemetry standard.
- • You will be empowered to own projects from conception through to successful deployment. This involves the ability to dissect complex, ambiguous problems into manageable, incremental deliverables. You will be expected to design modular, scalable solutions, deliver Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), actively gather user feedback, and iterate rapidly to refine and enhance the SDKs.
- • Ensuring the highest standards of quality will be paramount. This includes implementing comprehensive automated testing suites, establishing efficient Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines, producing clear and thorough documentation, and meticulously managing smooth, backwards-compatible upgrade paths for the SDKs.
- • Collaboration will be a cornerstone of this role. You will work closely with backend, frontend, product management, and solutions engineering teams to ensure that the mobile observability solutions are tightly integrated and provide cohesive end-to-end visibility across the entire technology stack.
- • A significant aspect of the role involves active engagement with the vibrant open-source community. This includes reviewing Pull Requests (PRs) from external contributors, participating in design discussions, and providing guidance to help shape the direction of the project.
- • You will also contribute to the growth of the engineering team by mentoring junior engineers, actively participating in technical design discussions, and playing a key role in shaping the long-term roadmap for mobile observability at Grafana Labs.
- • Grafana Labs is committed to fostering developer productivity. You will have the opportunity to leverage modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow, with the freedom to choose your preferred tools (within security guidelines) and a company-funded budget to support rapid iteration and experimentation.
- • We embrace pragmatic AI-assisted development, encouraging its use for faster prototyping, automated test generation, code refactoring, documentation creation, and incident follow-ups, always underpinned by rigorous code reviews and a commitment to quality.
- • Access to frontier AI models, such as GPT-Codex 5/3, Claude Opus 4.6, and Gemini 3 Pro, will be available to further enhance your development capabilities.
- • This role is ideal for a motivated self-starter who thrives in an autonomous yet highly collaborative environment, capable of tackling poorly defined scopes and driving initiatives forward with a bias toward action.
- • You will be working in a fully remote, globally distributed team, requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate across different time zones and cultures.
- • A customer-focused mindset, a passion for improving developer experience, and the ability to contribute beyond just coding – including documentation, mentorship, and roadmap influence – are highly valued.
- • The ability to navigate ambiguity with a pragmatic approach, prioritizing progress and iterating quickly based on feedback, is essential for success in this dynamic role.
- • Bonus points will be awarded for contributions to OpenTelemetry, crash reporting libraries, or other observability-focused open-source projects, as well as experience with cross-platform frameworks, mobile security, privacy, or platform integration challenges, and prior work on crash aggregation, session replay, or sampling for mobile telemetry.
