• As a Staff Software Engineer on the Agent Orchestration team at Decagon, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of conversational AI. You will own the long-term architectural vision for Decagon’s agent platform, a critical component that powers every interaction our AI agents have with customers. This role is designed for a seasoned engineer who possesses a deep technical understanding, excels at influencing cross-functional teams, and has a passion for building robust, principled systems designed for longevity and scalability.
• The Agent Orchestration team is responsible for the core execution layer that drives all agent interactions. This encompasses the sophisticated systems that manage model reasoning, meticulously evaluate agent behavior, and guarantee the reliable performance of our agents in real-world customer environments. Our primary focus is on ensuring correctness, unwavering reliability, and exceptional speed. The work you do will directly impact how Decagon agents plan, make decisions, and execute actions across millions of customer interactions daily, setting the standard for AI-driven customer experiences.
• In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in leading large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives that will redefine our orchestration engine. You will guide the evolution of how our systems scale to meet growing demands and establish the frameworks that empower engineers across the company to build innovative solutions on top of our platform. Your contributions will be essential in maintaining the intelligence and reliability that our clients have come to expect from Decagon agents.
• Key responsibilities will include owning and driving the architecture and continuous evolution of the core execution engine that underpins all Decagon agents. This involves deep technical leadership in designing and implementing systems capable of coordinating complex reasoning and action flows at an immense scale. You will be a champion for reliability, establishing and enforcing rigorous testing and observability standards across the entire orchestration stack, ensuring our systems are not only performant but also transparent and maintainable.
• Furthermore, you will be tasked with creating sophisticated frameworks that facilitate safe, rapid iteration on agent behavior. This means developing tools and methodologies that allow our teams to experiment with and deploy new agent capabilities with confidence and speed. A significant aspect of this role also involves mentoring senior engineers, fostering their growth, and actively contributing to the elevation of the technical culture within the Agent Orchestration team. You will be a guiding force, sharing your expertise and helping to cultivate a high-performing engineering environment.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of technical leadership and architectural design.
• Proficiency in Python or Typescript, with a strong understanding of asynchronous programming paradigms.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, concurrency, and/or the design and operation of large-scale real-time platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to define long-term technical architecture and lead complex, cross-functional engineering projects from conception to completion.
• Strong, well-developed instincts for system correctness, reliability, and debuggability, with a commitment to building high-quality, resilient software.
• Experience in mentoring other engineers, fostering technical growth, and raising the overall technical bar within a team.
