📋 Description

• Own and drive the development of Parafin’s Python-based underwriting and application decisioning platform, ensuring it scales to serve hundreds of thousands of small businesses daily.
• Define and implement the architecture and underlying infrastructure for the decisioning system, selecting technologies and design principles that ensure reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate closely with Data Science teams to integrate machine learning infrastructure into the decisioning platform, enabling data-driven, intelligent underwriting outcomes.
• Partner with Risk and Growth stakeholders to align platform capabilities with product initiatives that directly impact Parafin’s portfolio performance and financial bottom line.
• Build and refine controls and dashboards that empower non-engineering teams to configure, monitor, and adjust decisioning logic without requiring code changes.
• Translate complex financial risk models and compliance requirements into robust, production-grade software systems that operate with high accuracy and low latency.
• Optimize decisioning workflows to reduce approval times while maintaining strict risk thresholds and regulatory adherence.
• Lead the design of fault-tolerant systems that handle high-volume transaction streams, ensuring minimal downtime and data integrity across all decisioning pipelines.
• Conduct code reviews, establish engineering best practices, and mentor junior engineers to elevate the quality and consistency of the team’s output.
• Participate in on-call rotation to monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve critical production issues affecting merchant funding decisions in real time.
• Document system design decisions, data flows, and operational procedures to ensure knowledge sharing and continuity within the team and across departments.
• Evaluate and integrate third-party services and APIs that enhance decisioning capabilities, including credit bureau feeds, bank account verification tools, and transaction history analyzers.
• Champion observability and monitoring standards across the platform, implementing metrics, logging, and alerting systems that provide actionable insights into system health and decisioning performance.
• Act as a technical lead on cross-functional projects, coordinating with Product, Compliance, and Operations to deliver features that balance speed, risk, and user experience.
• Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap of the Merchant Decisioning team, identifying opportunities to modernize legacy components and adopt emerging technologies that improve efficiency.

🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of experience working in an engineering role
• Proficiency in Python and experience building scalable backend systems
• Proven track record of owning and driving infrastructure development from 0 to 1
• Experience integrating machine learning models into production systems
• Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, and reliability engineering
• Comfort working in ambiguity and thriving in a small, fast-moving team
