Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • Join the MongoDB Server Query Optimization team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of distributed, open-source query optimization. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a core component of MongoDB, directly impacting the performance and user experience for a wide array of workloads, including transactional, time-series, and analytical applications.
- • Our team is at the forefront of innovation, responsible for the entire lifecycle of a query within MongoDB. This encompasses the intricate processes of parsing, optimizing, and selecting the most efficient execution plan. We are embarking on a significant endeavor to systematically rewrite major components of our optimization and execution systems, presenting a chance to influence the architecture and implementation of a flexible schema, document database from its foundation.
- • You will be instrumental in designing and building the heart of our query engine. This involves tackling complex, real-world challenges with a direct and measurable impact on our global user base. The scale of our operations means that the code you write will be deployed across countless systems, processing vast amounts of data.
- • This role offers the chance to innovate within the realm of flexible schema databases, contributing to the development of a world-class query optimization system. You will be expected to research and integrate state-of-the-art query system concepts, leveraging deep knowledge of both MongoDB's strengths and weaknesses, as well as broader industry trends, to provide technical vision and direction.
- • As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be empowered to set initiative-level strategy, architect robust plans, and lead the team towards successful execution of complex projects. Your expertise will be crucial in advising management on critical decisions related to the product roadmap, development processes, system architecture, and design evolution.
- • Your responsibilities will extend to identifying, designing, implementing, testing, and supporting new features. These features will span across query performance enhancements, robustness improvements, query language evolution, diagnostic capabilities, and seamless integration with other MongoDB products and tools.
- • Collaboration is key. You will work closely with other talented engineers to coordinate changes within a feature-rich, large, and complex codebase, ensuring smooth integration and minimal disruption. Furthermore, you will engage with a diverse range of teams, including client drivers, cloud services, enterprise tools, support, consulting, education, and marketing, to ensure alignment and contribute to their respective projects.
- • A significant aspect of this role involves influencing and growing your fellow team members. You will actively mentor and coach engineers, fostering a culture of learning and technical excellence, and leading by example through your own contributions and approach to problem-solving.
- • Within your first three months, you will have made tangible contributions to a project slated for the next major version of MongoDB, alongside resolving bugs in a minor version of our latest stable release. This initial period will also be dedicated to understanding MongoDB's project lifecycle and our long-term strategic goals for the query system.
- • By the six-month mark, you will be taking on code review responsibilities and actively participating in the design and review of new features. You will also have the opportunity to broaden the team's perspective by presenting a favorite research paper or system architecture relevant to query systems.
- • Within twelve months, leveraging your extensive experience in the query domain, you will have made significant contributions to the long-term technical roadmap of the MongoDB Query team, shaping its future direction and priorities.
- • This position offers the flexibility to be based out of our US or Canadian offices, or to work remotely within the North America region, aligning with convenient work hours for your time zone. We support a distributed workforce and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where innovation thrives.
🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of experience in data management systems, with a strong focus on database internals and query processing.
- • Proven experience in building and shipping production-level code for systems with a large user base, demonstrating robust design principles and a commitment to rigorous code quality.
- • A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, coupled with deep competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture.
- • Extensive experience working with large codebases written in C++ or another systems programming language, including the ability to trace defects, estimate work complexity, and design evolution and integration strategies.
- • Passion for the theory and practice of database query engines, complemented by hands-on or academic experience in the database domain.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary range: $159,000 - $221,000 CAD annually.
- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits offerings.
- • Generous paid time off and flexible work arrangements.
- • 20 weeks of fully-paid, gender-neutral parental leave, plus fertility and adoption assistance.
- • Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with employer match.
- • Mental health counseling and support services.
- • Backup child and elder care assistance.
- • Opportunities for professional development and growth within a leading technology company.
