• • As a Staff Software Engineer on the Query Optimization team, you will be at the forefront of innovation, responsible for the entire lifecycle of a query within MongoDB. This includes the parsing of queries, the sophisticated process of optimization, and the critical selection of execution plans. You will play a pivotal role in designing and building the heart of a flexible schema, document database that is engineered for the demands of the AI era and beyond.
• • Our team is embarking on an ambitious journey to systematically rewrite major components of our optimization and execution systems. This endeavor requires visionary leadership and hands-on expertise to architect and implement robust, scalable, and efficient solutions. You will be instrumental in driving this transformation, ensuring MongoDB remains at the cutting edge of database technology.
• • You will delve into challenging problems that have a tangible impact on our users. Whether it's optimizing queries for high-throughput transactional systems, enhancing performance for time-series data analysis, or enabling complex analytical workloads, your contributions will be directly felt by our global customer base.
• • This role offers the chance to work with a world-class distributed open-source query optimizer. You will collaborate with talented engineers across the US and Europe, with support for both office-based and remote work arrangements, aligning projects with convenient work hours across time zones.
• • Your responsibilities will extend beyond coding. You will be expected to research state-of-the-art query systems to inform our design decisions, leveraging deep knowledge of both MongoDB's strengths and weaknesses, as well as broader industry trends, to provide technical vision and direction.
• • You will have the opportunity to set initiative-level strategy, architect comprehensive plans, and lead the team towards successful execution of complex projects. Advising management on critical decisions related to roadmap, processes, architecture, and design will be a key aspect of your role.
• • You will identify, design, implement, test, and support new features that enhance query performance, improve robustness, extend query language capabilities, provide advanced diagnostics, and ensure seamless integration with other MongoDB products and tools.
• • Collaboration is key. You will work closely with other engineers to coordinate seamless changes within our feature-rich, large codebase. Furthermore, you will engage with a diverse set of teams, including client drivers, cloud services, enterprise tools, support, consulting, education, and marketing, to ensure coordinated changes and contribute to their projects.
• • A significant part of this role involves influencing and growing your fellow team members. Through active mentoring, coaching, and leading by example, you will foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning within the team.
• • Success in this role will be measured by your ability to make immediate contributions to projects slated for future major versions, while also addressing critical bugs in stable releases. Within six months, you'll be taking on code review responsibilities, actively participating in design discussions, and sharing your expertise by presenting on relevant query system architectures or research papers. Within a year, your extensive experience will be instrumental in shaping the long-term technical roadmap for the MongoDB Query team, solidifying your impact on the future of our database technology.
