đź“‹ Description
- • As a Staff Software Engineer on the RUM (Real User Monitoring) Platform team, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of Datadog's Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM) pillar. This pivotal role is designed for an experienced engineer who thrives on tackling complex, foundational engineering challenges that underpin scalable, cross-product integrations. You will be instrumental in enabling critical observability features such as session replay, error tracking, feature flags, and product analytics to work seamlessly together.
- • Your primary focus will be on bringing clarity to intricate systems, driving architectural convergence across multiple product lines, and fostering strong bridges between engineering teams. As the inaugural Staff Engineer dedicated to this platform initiative, you will have the unique opportunity to define and execute the technical vision, directly impacting the pace of innovation for years to come.
- • You will be responsible for the design and evolution of the core platform infrastructure that powers a suite of frontend observability products within DEM. This includes ensuring the robustness and scalability of systems supporting RUM, session replay, feature flags, and product analytics.
- • A significant part of your role will involve building and scaling sophisticated data pipelines and reducers. You will leverage technologies like Kafka and Redis to efficiently ingest, transform, and serve vast amounts of real-time user experience data, ensuring low latency and high throughput.
- • You will collaborate closely with contributors to our SDKs, frontend technologies, and the OpenTelemetry project. Your work will be crucial in supporting an ever-growing number of data platforms and championing open standards in frontend instrumentation, thereby enhancing interoperability and extensibility.
- • A key aspect of your contribution will be guiding cross-functional collaboration. By identifying common patterns and needs across different product lines, you will unify backend infrastructure, reducing redundancy and promoting efficiency.
- • You will tackle ambiguous, high-impact technical problems by applying your deep systems knowledge. Your ability to deliver clear, actionable architectural direction will be essential in navigating these challenges and ensuring successful outcomes.
- • Beyond individual contributions, you will serve as a technical leader and mentor within the RUM organization and the broader Datadog engineering community. You will share your expertise, guide junior engineers, and help elevate the technical capabilities of the team.
- • The ideal candidate is deeply experienced in building scalable, distributed backend systems, with a strong command of technologies such as Kafka, Redis, and Java. You should be comfortable managing complex data pipelines and possess the skill to translate diverse data sources into semantically aligned, actionable insights.
- • You must be adept at navigating ambiguity and driving clarity across multiple teams and product surfaces. A familiarity with open standards in observability, such as OpenTelemetry, and a genuine excitement to contribute to this broader ecosystem are highly valued.
- • We are looking for a proactive and hands-on individual who is eager to dive into unclear problem spaces and transform them into reliable, high-performance systems. Your ability to take ownership and drive projects to completion will be critical.
- • While Datadog values its hybrid office culture, this role offers remote work opportunities across France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, providing flexibility and work-life harmony.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience in designing, building, and scaling distributed backend systems, with a strong understanding of technologies like Kafka, Redis, and Java.
- • Demonstrated ability to manage complex data pipelines, ingest diverse data sources, and transform them into actionable insights.
- • Strong experience in navigating ambiguity, driving technical clarity, and fostering collaboration across multiple engineering teams and product lines.
- • Familiarity with open standards in observability, such as OpenTelemetry, and a passion for contributing to the broader ecosystem.
- • Proactive, hands-on approach with a proven track record of tackling complex technical challenges and delivering robust solutions.
- • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and influence technical direction.
🏖️ Benefits
- • New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP).
- • Continuous professional development, including product training and defined career pathing.
- • Intradepartmental mentor and buddy program for effective in-house networking and knowledge sharing.
