Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Shape the moment-to-moment gameplay of a brand-new entry in one of the most beloved real-time strategy franchises of all time. As Technical Designer you will sit at the intersection of design vision and technical execution, turning ambitious concepts into living, breathing systems that millions of players will experience.
- • Prototype, implement, and relentlessly iterate on gameplay content: NPC behaviors that feel intelligent and reactive, interactable objects that reward curiosity, player abilities that expand strategic depth, event hooks that seamlessly weave narrative and audio into the battlefield, scripted sequences that deliver blockbuster moments, and tutorial help systems that welcome newcomers without patronizing veterans.
- • Own the bug-fixing pipeline for your features, diving deep into scripting logic, performance profiles, and edge-case scenarios to guarantee a polished, stable experience on day one and beyond.
- • Partner daily with artists to translate stunning concept art and animation into functional in-game assets, ensuring that visual fidelity never comes at the cost of clarity or responsiveness. You will champion workflows that let artists iterate quickly while respecting memory budgets and frame-time constraints.
- • Collaborate shoulder-to-shoulder with engineers to extend and refine design tools, building reusable components that empower the entire design team. Your feedback will directly influence engine architecture, scripting APIs, and data pipelines.
- • Translate high-level design intentions into precise technical specifications, balancing creative ambition against CPU, GPU, and memory realities. You will become the go-to diplomat who speaks fluent “designer” and “engineer,” keeping both camps aligned and motivated.
- • Work with producers and team leadership to break down large features into sprint-sized tasks, provide accurate effort estimates, surface risks early, and celebrate incremental wins that keep momentum high across a four-day work week.
- • Contribute to studio-wide knowledge sharing: write internal wiki articles, run lunch-and-learn sessions, and mentor junior designers who want to level up their technical chops.
- • Leverage Blackbird’s flexible work model—remote within Canada, hybrid, or fully in-studio—to craft a schedule that maximizes both productivity and life outside of work.
- • Immerse yourself in a culture that prizes long-term career growth over crunch, where shipping a great game is inseparable from maintaining sustainable, human-centered development practices.
