Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Driver Operations Specialist at Mapbox, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and real-world performance of Mapbox’s location platform by leading in-vehicle testing initiatives that directly impact product releases, navigation accuracy, and user experience for millions of developers and end-users globally.
- • You will be responsible for transforming cross-functional testing requests into actionable, detailed test plans, executing rigorous in-vehicle drive tests across diverse environments, and serving as the vital link between field operations and internal engineering, product, and QA teams to surface issues, validate features, and drive continuous improvement in Mapbox’s mapping, navigation, and ADAS technologies.
- • The Driver Operations team is a highly collaborative, mission-driven group embedded within Mapbox’s broader engineering and product organization, working closely with software, hardware, and data teams to validate real-world performance of mapping SDKs, APIs, and hardware integrations across global test sites in the U.S., Germany, Japan, and the Philippines.
- • You will join a team that values hands-on expertise, technical curiosity, and cross-functional communication — offering you the opportunity to deepen your automotive testing expertise, gain exposure to cutting-edge location technologies, and contribute to high-visibility projects that shape the future of autonomous driving, fleet logistics, and consumer navigation experiences.
- • What you’ll do day to day:
- • Intake and synthesize testing requests from product, engineering, and R&D teams, translating ambiguous or evolving requirements into clear, prioritized test objectives aligned with release timelines and business goals.
- • Convert functional and non-functional requirements into detailed, repeatable test cases with defined success criteria, pass/fail thresholds, and data collection protocols for in-vehicle validation.
- • Define and prioritize weekly test plans by assessing scope, urgency, resource availability, and geographic constraints, balancing internal driver capacity with third-party partner coordination across time zones.
- • Coordinate global test execution by scheduling, briefing, and supporting internal drivers and external service providers, ensuring consistent test execution, real-time issue reporting, and adherence to safety and compliance standards.
- • Perform hands-on in-vehicle drive testing using Mapbox SDKs, APIs, and hardware setups to evaluate navigation accuracy, routing logic, sensor fusion, ADAS alerts, and map-matching performance under real-world traffic, weather, and road conditions.
- • Assist in managing Mapbox’s domestic and international test fleet, including vehicle preparation, sensor calibration, data logging equipment maintenance, and logistics for test device deployment and retrieval.
- • Surface bugs, performance bottlenecks, or feature insights through structured feedback channels (Jira, Confluence, internal dashboards), providing clear, reproducible steps and contextual evidence to accelerate root-cause analysis.
- • Contribute to the tracking and reporting of key testing metrics such as test coverage, defect density, pass rates, and cycle time, enabling data-driven decisions for release readiness and process optimization.
- • Develop deep functional knowledge of Mapbox’s core products — including Navigation SDK, Map Matching, Directions API, and Live Traffic — through direct, iterative testing and collaboration with product specialists.
- • Maintain clear, proactive, and transparent communication with stakeholders via Slack, email, video meetings, and test reports, adeptly translating technical findings into actionable insights for both engineers and non-technical leaders.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3+ years of proven experience in automotive test coordination, validation, or execution, preferably within OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, or autonomous vehicle development environments.
- • Valid driver’s license and passport, with availability for short-notice domestic and international travel to support test execution in the U.S., Germany, Japan, and the Philippines.
- • Demonstrated hands-on proficiency in troubleshooting hardware and software systems in-vehicle environments, including experience with CAN bus, ADAS sensors, GPS/GNSS modules, and embedded Linux/Android platforms.
- • Command-line proficiency, including practical experience with ADB (Android Debug Bridge) for device logging, app control, and diagnostics during field testing.
- • Strong ability to communicate clearly and concisely across technical and non-technical audiences using Slack, email, and meetings, effectively bridging gaps between engineers, product managers, and operations teams.
- • Familiarity with automotive networking protocols (CAN/LIN), ADAS architectures, navigation algorithms, and mapping technologies such as map matching, localization, and route optimization.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive hourly compensation ranging from $50–$60 per hour, with final rate determined by qualifications, experience, location, and market factors during the interview process.
- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans, including mental health resources and wellness stipends to support holistic well-being.
- • Generous parental leave policy, flexible work arrangements, and life-event accommodations designed to empower employees to bring their whole selves to work.
- • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development through access to training, conferences, and internal knowledge-sharing initiatives that build expertise in location technology and automotive systems.
- • A strong organizational focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with active efforts to build teams that reflect a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
- • Participation in E-Verify and Right to Work compliance, ensuring a fair, legal, and transparent hiring process for all candidates.
