Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Shape the future of global trade as a Full-Stack Engineer at Kaiko Systems, the Berlin-based scale-up that is digitising the maritime industry from the engine room to the board room. Since 2020 we have partnered with tanker fleets, container giants and port authorities on four continents, replacing paper checklists and siloed spreadsheets with real-time analytics that prevent mechanical failures, cut fuel burn and keep 1.8 million seafarers safe.
- • You will own end-to-end features that turn raw vessel sensor data and crew reports into predictive insights. On a typical two-week sprint you might ingest AIS streams with Python micro-services, surface anomalies in a React dashboard, and deploy new models to our Kubernetes cluster running on AWS. Every line of code you ship is used the same day by superintendents deciding whether a ship can sail or needs emergency dry-dock.
- • Work directly with captains, chief engineers and marine superintendents to understand the harsh realities of life at sea—salt spray, satellite latency, 18-hour days—and translate them into elegant software. Your user interviews happen over Starlink video calls from the bridge of a 300-metre container ship, giving you unfiltered feedback that no land-based product manager ever sees.
- • Lead the migration of our legacy Flask monolith to a service-oriented architecture. You will design GraphQL schemas, set up event-driven pipelines with Kafka, and implement blue-green deployments that keep mission-critical systems online while a vessel is mid-ocean with no IT support for 3,000 miles.
- • Build mobile-first Progressive Web Apps that work offline and sync when the ship reaches port. Seafarers use your app in engine rooms where temperatures hit 50 °C and Wi-Fi is a luxury; performance budgets, caching strategies and battery optimisation are not afterthoughts—they are survival skills.
- • Implement rigorous security controls that satisfy both ISO 27001 auditors and the US Coast Guard. You will harden container images, rotate secrets via AWS Secrets Manager and run chaos-engineering drills that simulate a complete satellite outage during hurricane season.
- • Collaborate with our data-science team to productionise anomaly-detection models that predict turbo-charger failures 14 days in advance. You will wrap Python notebooks in FastAPI services, set up feature stores and monitor drift with Evidently AI, saving charterers up to $250,000 per avoided casualty.
- • Mentor junior developers through pair programming, architecture reviews and lunch-and-learn sessions. Our flat hierarchy means your pull-request comments are read by the CTO the same morning, and your tech-radar proposals can shift the entire roadmap within a single sprint.
- • Contribute to open-source projects that the maritime community depends on, from AIS parsers to ECDIS mapping libraries. We sponsor your talks at PyCon, React Summit and local meetups, turning our engineering culture into a recruiting magnet across Europe and Asia.
- • Measure success not just in story points but in lives and dollars saved. When your latest release reduces bunker consumption by 3 % across a 40-vessel fleet, you will see the CO₂ reduction reported in the same weekly digest that celebrates code-coverage hitting 90 %.
🎯 Requirements
- • 4+ years of professional experience building production-grade web applications in Python (FastAPI or Django) and modern JavaScript/TypeScript (React or Vue)
- • Proven ability to design and operate cloud-native systems on AWS (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3) with Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform or CDK
- • Solid grasp of relational databases (PostgreSQL) and data-modelling techniques for high-volume time-series workloads
- • Comfortable working in a fully remote, asynchronous team across CET to SGT time zones; excellent written and verbal English
- • Nice-to-have: experience with maritime protocols (AIS, NMEA), edge-computing constraints or regulated industries (ISO 27001, SOC 2)
🏖️ Benefits
- • Work from anywhere on Earth with a €2,000 home-office stipend and annual co-working budget
- • 30 days paid vacation plus an extra "shore leave" week when you join to disconnect and recharge
- • Stock-option package with a four-year vesting schedule and a 10 % discount for early exercise
- • Annual €3,000 learning & conference budget and paid speaking days to share your expertise
- • Monthly satellite-internet allowance so you can test your code on the same low-bandwidth links our users rely on
