📋 Description

• As an Applied AI Engineer at Automattic, you will shape how AI transforms products used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, from empowering creators to tell better stories to helping merchants compete effectively in ecommerce.
• You will ship user-facing AI features across Automattic’s ecosystem—including WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Beeper, Mesh (formerly Clay), and Pocket Casts—building and iterating rapidly on AI-powered products that directly impact millions of users.
• You’ll collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers either in-person in NYC or asynchronously across global distributed teams, experimenting and scaling AI innovations from prototype to production while staying current with cutting-edge AI developments.
• This role offers the autonomy to focus on high-impact work without startup fundraising pressure or corporate bureaucracy, backed by a profitable, mission-driven company committed to democratizing publishing, commerce, and messaging through open-source principles.

🎯 Requirements

• Production experience with LLMs (via APIs or custom implementations) at meaningful scale
• Strong full-stack development skills in PHP, TypeScript, and React
• Proven track record of shipping AI features that users actually use and value
• Ability to build AI-powered user interfaces that perform well at scale
• Machine learning fundamentals and a habit of staying current with rapid field advancements
• Experience technical leadership or influence on high-performing teams
