- • As an Applied AI Engineer at Ascertain, you will be one of the first dedicated engineers focused on building AI agents that automate administrative work in healthcare, specifically voice agents that call payers to check prior authorization status and capture outcomes—directly reducing staff burden and improving operational efficiency in major health systems.
- • You will design, build, and ship voice agents that navigate IVR systems, handle hold queues, engage in multi-turn dialogue with human representatives, and extract structured data; integrate telephony, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and LLM components into reliable production pipelines; develop evaluation and QA infrastructure to measure agent performance; build APIs connecting agent outputs to prior authorization workflows; instrument call outcomes and system metrics for continuous improvement; collaborate with operations and clinical teams to identify high-leverage automation opportunities; and expand into other agentic systems (chat, document understanding, internal tooling) as the company’s AI efforts grow.
- • Ascertain is a mission-driven healthcare AI company backed by Northwell Health and Deerfield Management, building AI agents to automate burdensome administrative tasks for care teams, with a focus on restoring time, trust, and focus to healthcare workers by driving financial resilience and operational clarity in a strained system.
- • In this role, you will gain deep expertise in production-grade LLM applications, voice and conversational AI systems, observability, and healthcare-specific AI use cases; you will own end-to-end agent lifecycle from design to monitoring, shape the technical direction of Ascertain’s AI platform, and grow into a broader AI engineering generalist role with significant impact and autonomy.
🎯 Requirements
- • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience owning production systems end-to-end—from design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration
- • 2+ years of professional Python experience building APIs, services, or data workflows
- • Hands-on experience developing or deploying LLM-based applications or RAG systems in a real production setting (not just prototypes)
- • Comfort operating with ambiguity and shipping the first version of something that doesn't exist yet
