Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Own the end-to-end defense of litigation, arbitration, and pre-litigation matters for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company and its broker-dealer affiliate Hornor Townsend & Kent (HTK), acting as the single accountable attorney from the moment a complaint is filed through final resolution, settlement, or trial verdict.
  • • Direct and continuously evaluate outside counsel on strategy, budget, and execution—negotiating fee arrangements, approving key filings, and personally drafting dispositive motions, discovery responses, and settlement agreements to ensure every legal dollar advances Penn Mutual’s risk tolerance and business objectives.
  • • Architect and manage complex discovery in federal, state, and FINRA forums: design defensible collection plans, supervise e-discovery vendors, and prepare fact and expert witnesses for depositions, hearings, and trial, leveraging AI-enabled review tools to accelerate timelines and reduce cost.
  • • Serve as the primary interface with the SEC, FINRA, and state securities and insurance departments on enforcement matters—translating examination requests into actionable internal workflows, coordinating document productions, and delivering polished responses that protect the company’s reputation and minimize regulatory exposure.
  • • Build, own, and continuously evolve Penn Mutual’s Anti-Fraud Plan, integrating data analytics, AI-driven monitoring, and cross-functional collaboration to detect suspicious activity early, quantify financial exposure, and implement controls that deter future misconduct.
  • • Investigate and resolve sensitive customer complaints and employment-related disputes in close partnership with HR, conducting root-cause analyses that feed directly into policy enhancements, enterprise-wide training initiatives, and cultural improvements aligned with Penn Mutual’s mission to “help people get stronger.”
  • • Coordinate multi-disciplinary internal reviews—gathering documents, interviewing witnesses, and synthesizing findings into concise executive briefs that enable senior leadership to make informed, risk-based decisions on product launches, advertising campaigns, and strategic partnerships.
  • • Design and deliver dynamic, audience-specific training programs on litigation avoidance, regulatory developments, privacy obligations, and ethical sales practices, elevating the legal IQ of more than 2,000 employees and financial professionals nationwide while reinforcing a culture of compliance and integrity.
  • • Oversee periodic state insurance department examinations end-to-end: manage information requests, on-site logistics, and follow-up remediation plans to ensure seamless compliance, zero regulatory surprises, and sustained licensure across all jurisdictions.
  • • Provide real-time, strategic legal counsel to business leaders on emerging risks, translating complex statutes, regulations, and case law into clear, commercially sound guidance that accelerates innovation without compromising compliance.
  • • Champion Penn Mutual’s flexible, remote-first culture by modeling effective virtual collaboration, mentoring junior attorneys, and leveraging cutting-edge legal technology to drive efficiency, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement across the Law Department.
  • • Contribute to enterprise risk assessments, scenario planning, and crisis-response drills, positioning Penn Mutual to thrive amid evolving regulatory, economic, and competitive pressures while safeguarding the long-term interests of policyowners and stakeholders.
  • • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and discretion, safeguarding confidential data and reinforcing a culture where every employee feels empowered to act in the best interests of clients and the company.

  • • Demonstrated track record of independently managing complex litigation, arbitration, and regulatory examinations from inception through resolution.
  • • Expert-level knowledge of FINRA, SEC, and state insurance regulations, with experience drafting and negotiating settlement agreements and consent orders.
  • • Proficiency with e-discovery platforms, legal analytics, and AI-enabled research tools to drive efficiency and cost control.
  • • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers.
