Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Build and scale backend systems that power Spellbook’s core product features including Reviews, Chat, and Library, ensuring high reliability and low latency for legal professionals.
- • Design and implement AI-driven workflows such as search, inference, and orchestration layers that support LLM-powered contract drafting and review functionalities.
- • Develop and operate Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems at production scale with strict data isolation, permissions control, and performance optimization.
- • Own critical platform concerns for AI systems including rate limiting, retry strategies, consistency guarantees, fallback mechanisms, and safe degradation pathways during failures.
- • Collaborate directly with Product and Design teams to make informed tradeoffs between latency, accuracy, user experience, and system reliability in high-stakes legal contexts.
- • Apply modern development practices such as agent-assisted coding to accelerate delivery while maintaining rigorous code review, testing, and security standards.
- • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response for production services, proactively improving system reliability through root cause analysis and prevention strategies.
- • Model and optimize NoSQL data structures in MongoDB, including schema design, denormalization decisions, indexing strategies, query optimization, and performance profiling to handle high-volume legal document data.
- • Integrate with and manage interactions with LLM providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, ensuring efficient, cost-effective, and compliant API usage in production.
- • Operate and maintain infrastructure using Docker, AWS, and CDK to deploy, monitor, and scale services reliably across a remote, distributed engineering team.
- • Communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders, translating complex system behavior into actionable insights for product and legal teams.
- • Approach ambiguous problems with autonomy, turning vague requirements like "we should do something here" into defined, shipped solutions with measurable outcomes.
- • Prioritize pragmatism in system design—recognizing when scale is necessary versus when simplicity and speed deliver greater value to users.
- • Actively contribute to team-wide improvements by identifying bottlenecks, suggesting tooling enhancements, and supporting peer development through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of experience building backend systems in production
- • Strong fundamentals in backend engineering and distributed systems: APIs, data modeling, concurrency, queues, AI inference
- • Strong NoSQL (ideally MongoDB) data modeling and performance tuning: schema design/denormalization tradeoffs, indexing strategy, query optimization, and profiling/diagnosing bottlenecks in production
- • Ability to take ambiguous, high-impact problems from concept to shipped outcome
- • Strong communication skills to explain technical decisions to engineers and non-engineers
- • Pragmatic mindset to balance scalability with simplicity and know when to draw the line
🏖️ Benefits
- • Company-paid group benefits for you and your family, with $1,000 towards mental health support
- • Generous time off policies including holiday closure and paid monthly meals
- • Annual wellness allowance and parental leave top-ups
- • Competitive stock option grants as a pivotal early employee
