📋 Description

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that power ChowNow’s digital ordering platform for over 20,000 independent restaurants across North America.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop new features with a strong emphasis on quality, observability, security, availability, and maintainability.
• Improve system resilience by identifying and implementing iterative enhancements to core infrastructure, APIs, and data pipelines.
• Participate in continuous integration and agile workflows to ensure high-quality, well-tested, and deployable code.
• Monitor and optimize backend applications to ensure high performance and reliability under heavy traffic from digital ordering channels including Google, Yelp, Apple, and Snap.
• Contribute to the evolution of engineering best practices by advocating for clean architecture, automated testing, and robust deployment pipelines.
• Work closely with Lead Software Engineers and peers to refine development processes and elevate team-wide standards for code quality and system design.
• Support products that process over $1B in gross food sales annually while helping restaurants save more than $700M in third-party commission fees.
• Focus on enabling restaurants to own their customer relationships by building white-label ordering solutions that avoid inflated pricing from third-party delivery apps.
• Prioritize restaurant-centric design in all engineering decisions, ensuring systems are reliable, fast, and tailored to the needs of local food businesses.
• Engage in peer code reviews, technical planning sessions, and post-mortems to foster a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry trends to inform strategic improvements to the backend architecture.
• Operate in a remote-first environment with asynchronous collaboration across U.S.-based teams, adhering to ChowNow’s commitment to inclusivity and individual contribution.
• No direct reports; this role reports to a Lead Software Engineer and focuses on technical leadership through influence and execution.
• Contribute to a platform that enables restaurants to build branded websites, mobile apps, manage menus, consolidate delivery, and run targeted marketing—all without relying on third-party platforms.
• Embrace a “quality product first” engineering philosophy that has driven ChowNow’s brand recognition and market leadership since 2012.
• Support the company’s mission to help independent restaurants thrive in the digital economy under new leadership and evolving technological tools.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and scaling backend systems in production environments
• Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, or Go
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, database design (SQL/NoSQL), and distributed systems
• Proven track record of implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices
• Deep commitment to observability, security, and system reliability in application architecture
