📋 Description

• As a Backend Software Engineer on Substack’s Activation team, you will build and test features that bring new readers to the platform and help them discover content they love, improving discovery, onboarding, notifications, and recommendations while running A/B tests on key user flows.
• You will work closely with data and design teams to conceptualize and create consumer-facing features and experiments, collaborating with designers, writers, support staff, and others from concept to deployment, owning your work and operating autonomously.
• Substack is building a new economic engine for culture by empowering creators with direct subscriptions, economic autonomy, creative ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences, countering legacy media gatekeeping and social media chaos.
• You will work with TypeScript (Node/Express and React) and Postgres, with opportunities to learn these technologies if not already familiar, and contribute to a mission-driven team focused on enabling independent expression and a better business model for writers.
• You will take pride in building elegant, delightful product experiences that get out of the way so writers can focus on writing and connecting with readers, while holding yourself and others to high standards on production systems.

🎯 Requirements

• At least 5+ years of software engineering experience
• Experience with TypeScript, Node/Express, React, and Postgres (or willingness to learn)
• Ability to work independently and autonomously in a small, fast-moving team
• Commitment to high standards on production systems and building elegant user experiences
• Passion for Substack’s mission to build a better business model for writing
