Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Battery Pack Design Engineer at Ridealso Inc., you will play a pivotal role in transforming innovative battery designs from concept and lab validation into scalable, mass-produced solutions that power the next generation of efficient, affordable electric vehicles. Your work directly bridges the gap between prototype excellence and production readiness, ensuring that ALSO’s battery packs meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and manufacturability while supporting the company’s mission to revolutionize urban mobility through vertically integrated, small EVs that are 10-50x more efficient than traditional vehicles.
  • • You will lead mechanical design improvements by building and testing prototypes, developing and executing DOE (Design of Experiments) test plans both in-house and with contract manufacturers, and driving design-for-manufacturing (DFM) optimizations at component suppliers and first-article production (FATP) contract manufacturers. This includes iterating on battery pack architecture to enhance performance, reduce cost, and improve assembly efficiency without compromising safety or durability.
  • • You will own validation and compliance efforts, ensuring battery designs meet rigorous mechanical (shock/vibration), environmental (thermal/humidity), and safety (propagation/crush) requirements per industry standards such as UN 38.3, UL 1642, and SAE J2464. You will interpret test failures, root-cause issues, and drive targeted design tweaks to achieve passing results, maintaining traceability and documentation throughout the validation lifecycle.
  • • You will serve as the primary technical liaison between ALSO’s engineering headquarters and battery contract manufacturers (CMs), rigorously reviewing First Article Inspections (FAI), analyzing CPK/PPK data to assess process capability and stability, and leading onsite execution trips (2–6 weeks per year) to resolve production bottlenecks, align on process improvements, and ensure seamless transition from pilot to volume production.
  • • You will define and scope lifecycle testing strategies focused on improving long-term quality and reliability, including assessing degradation mechanisms, cycle life, and assembly integrity under real-world conditions. Your insights will inform design updates, material selections, and process controls that enhance pack durability and field performance over the vehicle’s lifespan.
  • • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including electrical, thermal, materials, and manufacturing engineers to ensure holistic pack optimization, balancing electrical performance, thermal management, mechanical integrity, and cost targets while adhering to aggressive development timelines in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • • You will contribute to the continuous improvement of ALSO’s battery platform by identifying opportunities for standardization, modularity, and scalability across vehicle platforms, helping to reduce engineering overhead and accelerate future product launches.
  • • You will join a mission-driven, world-class team in Palo Alto composed of alumni from top technology, automotive, cycling, outdoor recreation, and retail companies, where innovation is fueled by hands-on building, rapid iteration, and a shared passion for redefining personal and urban mobility through sustainable, delightful electric vehicles.
  • • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in high-volume battery production engineering, gain end-to-end ownership of the battery lifecycle from design to launch, and develop leadership skills in technical coordination across global supply chains—positioning you as a key enabler of ALSO’s scalability and a future leader in next-generation EV battery systems.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with strong fundamentals in engineering and physics
  • • 5–10+ years of hands-on experience in battery engineering, including cell selection, module hardware design, and electrical interconnect systems
  • • Proven ability to lead and execute complex battery platform projects from prototype to production validation
  • • Deep understanding of battery safety and reliability standards (UN 38.3, UL 1642, SAE J2464) and ability to apply them to design decisions
  • • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-velocity environment where priorities shift rapidly and adaptability is essential

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Robust health coverage with 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, plus FSA and HSA options
  • • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates for personalized healthcare support
  • • Rich fertility and family-building benefits through Progyny, including coverage for IVF, adoption, and surrogacy
  • • Flexible time off policy to support work-life balance and personal well-being
  • • 401(k) retirement plan with company match to support long-term financial security
