Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Northwestern Medicine’s Physician Billing (PB) Coding team as a Coding Specialist I and become the critical link between clinical care and revenue integrity. Working 100 % remotely from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, or Wisconsin, you will review and translate complex professional-fee encounters into compliant ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for more than 4,500 providers across 160+ specialties. Every line you code directly impacts the financial health of one of the nation’s top academic health systems and helps ensure patients receive uninterrupted access to breakthrough care.
- • Own a daily queue of 60–80 ambulatory, emergency, surgical, and diagnostic encounters, prioritizing by payer, global period, and DNFB targets. You will abstract diagnoses, procedures, modifiers, and provider credentials from Epic, Nuance Clintegrity, and scanned documentation, achieving 95 % accuracy while maintaining ≤ 3-day lag. Your expertise reduces downstream denials, accelerates cash flow, and protects NM’s 3.8-billion-dollar annual net patient revenue.
- • Perform concurrent and retrospective coding audits, identifying documentation gaps and querying providers through Epic’s built-in task system. You will craft concise, evidence-based queries that educate clinicians on laterality, specificity, and medical necessity, driving a 10 % year-over-year improvement in Case-Mix Index and quality scores tied to value-based contracts.
- • Collaborate with Coding Quality, Compliance, and Payer Enrollment teams to resolve CCI, MUE, and LCD/NCD edits before claims drop. You will serve as the first line of defense against federal and commercial audits by attaching compliant ICD-10-CM guidelines, AHA Coding Clinics, and CPT Assistant references within the billing system, cutting external audit risk in half.
- • Support Epic Beacon oncology pathways and Epic Cupid cardiac catheterization coding by assigning appropriate radiation oncology, chemotherapy administration, and interventional cardiology codes. Your precision ensures Northwestern’s NCI-designated cancer center and top-10 heart program meet registry and research benchmarks that fuel grant funding and national rankings.
- • Participate in monthly Lunch-and-Learn sessions to present interesting cases, share specialty-specific tips, and beta-test AI-assisted coding tools. You will contribute to team playbooks that reduce new-hire ramp-up time by 30 % and foster a culture of continuous learning across 60+ remote coding colleagues.
- • Monitor your individual KPI dashboard—quality, productivity, turnaround, and query response rate—published in real time on Microsoft Power BI. You will partner with your supervisor to create quarterly development plans that align personal goals with NM’s strategic pillar of financial sustainability, positioning you for fast-track promotion to Coding Specialist II or Revenue Integrity Analyst within 18–24 months.
- • Champion cybersecurity and HIPAA best practices by using NM-issued encrypted laptop, secure VPN, and multi-factor authentication. You will complete annual privacy and security modules, ensuring zero PHI breaches while enjoying the flexibility of remote work.
🎯 Requirements
- • CPC, CCA, CCS-P, or CRC credential through AAPC or AHIMA plus one year of professional-fee coding experience in a high-volume, multi-specialty setting; new graduates with a coding certificate from an AHIMA- or AAPC-approved program and a 95 % pre-employment coding assessment score will be considered.
- • Demonstrated competency assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis and CPT/HCPCS procedure codes across at least three of the following service lines: emergency medicine, primary care, orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, OB/GYN, oncology, or general surgery.
- • Working knowledge of Medicare National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), payer-specific LCD/NCD policies, and modifier 25/57/59 guidelines; ability to achieve 95 % accuracy on NM’s standardized coding test (50-record blind review) within five business days of interview.
- • Comfortable navigating Epic, Cerner, or similar EMR to locate dictated notes, operative reports, imaging, and pathology; experience with encoder tools (3M, TruCode, Clintegrity) and Microsoft Teams for remote collaboration.
- • High-speed wired internet (≥ 25 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload) and a private, distraction-free home office that meets HIPAA privacy standards; must reside in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, or Wisconsin to satisfy payer and state tax compliance.
🏖️ Benefits
- • True work-life balance: 100 % remote schedule with flexible start times between 6:00 am–9:00 am CT, zero on-call requirements, and compressed 4×10 option after 90 days.
- • Industry-leading total rewards: 16 % 403(b) employer contribution (no match required), tuition reimbursement up to $5,250 per year for advanced coding or HIM degrees, and paid AAPC/AHIMA CEUs including annual conference travel.
- • Comprehensive health & wellness: medical, dental, vision from day one, 24/7 virtual care, on-demand mental-health visits, and free access to Northwestern’s LiveWell fitness app with wearable-device subsidies.
- • Generous time off: 18 days PTO first year + 8 paid holidays + 6 sick days; opportunity to purchase up to 5 extra PTO days and 12-week paid parental leave at 100 % base pay.
