📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services that power BlaBlaCar’s core carpooling and bus travel platform used by 27 million members annually.
• Collaborate with product managers, frontend engineers, and data teams to translate user needs into robust, high-performance API endpoints and microservices.
• Optimize system architecture for reliability, low latency, and high availability across 21 countries with diverse regulatory and operational requirements.
• Implement and maintain secure authentication, authorization, and data privacy mechanisms in compliance with international standards.
• Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and sprint planning as part of an agile team of 800 employees across five global offices.
• Monitor production systems using observability tools to detect, diagnose, and resolve performance bottlenecks and service disruptions.
• Contribute to the evolution of the tech stack by evaluating and integrating new technologies that improve scalability, maintainability, and developer productivity.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration between backend services and frontend applications, mobile apps, and third-party booking systems.
• Write clean, well-documented, and testable code with a strong emphasis on unit and integration testing to ensure system stability.
• Support incident response and on-call rotations to maintain service uptime and rapid resolution of critical issues.
• Help mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the engineering organization.
• Adapt to evolving business priorities by rapidly prototyping and iterating on features that enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
• Ensure backend systems can handle peak loads during high-demand travel periods across Europe and beyond.
• Maintain clear documentation for APIs, data models, and system workflows to enable smooth collaboration across distributed teams.
• Engage in continuous improvement of deployment pipelines and CI/CD practices to accelerate release cycles while maintaining quality.
• Contribute to the company’s culture of innovation by proposing and implementing technical improvements that reduce costs, increase efficiency, or improve user retention.
• Work in a multicultural environment with over 50 nationalities represented, requiring clear communication and collaboration across time zones.
• Participate in technical roadmapping sessions to align backend development with long-term company goals for global expansion and service diversification.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven experience as a Backend Engineer building scalable distributed systems
• Proficiency in at least one backend programming language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, Node.js)
• Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Strong understanding of database systems (SQL and/or NoSQL) and performance optimization
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
