Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • Ashby Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to join our rapidly growing SaaS company as our first dedicated accounting leader. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to build and scale the accounting function from its current strong foundation, driving operational rigor, audit readiness, and financial integrity. As the Controller, you will own the entire accounting lifecycle, ensuring accuracy, speed, and scalability across all financial operations. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of Ashby's financial infrastructure, partnering closely with the VP of Finance & Operations and executive leadership to support our ambitious growth trajectory.
- • You will lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with an unwavering focus on consistency, meticulousness, and continuous improvement. This includes ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with US GAAP, with particular attention to complex accounting areas such as revenue recognition (ASC 606), stock-based compensation, and other technical accounting matters. Your expertise will be crucial in navigating these intricate areas and establishing best practices.
- • A key responsibility will be enhancing our audit readiness. You will serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, managing the audit process end-to-end. This involves strengthening internal controls, developing comprehensive documentation, and ensuring that Ashby is consistently prepared for scrutiny. Your proactive approach to controls and compliance will be vital in building trust and confidence with stakeholders.
- • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional leaders across the organization to ensure that our chart of accounts, reporting structures, and accounting policies are not only robust but also evolve in lockstep with the company's dynamic growth. This strategic alignment will ensure that financial reporting accurately reflects the business's performance and supports informed decision-making at all levels.
- • This role encompasses oversight and optimization of critical operational accounting functions, including cash management, accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), billing, tax compliance, statutory reporting, and eventually payroll. You will identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and efficiency gains within these areas to support our scaling operations.
- • Driving thoughtful improvements to our accounting systems, workflows, and automation is paramount. You will leverage technology and innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, reduce manual tasks, and ensure the scalability of our accounting infrastructure. This includes evaluating and implementing new tools or optimizing existing ones to streamline operations.
- • You will partner with external accounting firms to manage and oversee the accounting for international subsidiaries. This involves reviewing local statutory results, ensuring accurate consolidation into the US parent company's financial statements, and maintaining compliance with all relevant international regulations. Your ability to manage global accounting complexities will be essential.
- • This position demands a leader who is deeply grounded in accounting fundamentals, with a passion for clean reporting, disciplined processes, and strong internal controls. You will operate with a long-term mindset, building an accounting function that is prepared for future complexity and public company requirements, even before they are mandated. You are energized by developing people, taking pride in teaching, mentoring, and elevating the team around you, measuring success by the growth and strength of the organization under your leadership.
- • The ideal candidate is comfortable operating hands-on in the details while simultaneously thinking strategically about how the accounting function scales. You understand what breaks at scale in a high-growth SaaS environment and are motivated to build ahead of potential challenges. This role is for someone who thrives on shaping, refining, and strengthening an evolving accounting function, not just inheriting a fully built system. You are excited by the prospect of setting the standard through deep involvement and a commitment to transaction-level accuracy, from revenue recognition to close mechanics.
- • Ashby is building the next generation of enterprise software, empowering talent leaders with a data-centric approach. We are well-funded, backed by top investors, and serve thousands of leading customers like Snowflake, OpenAI, and Shopify. Our growth metrics are best-in-class, with tens of millions in ARR and over 100% year-over-year growth. Joining Ashby means becoming part of a company with a strong product-market fit, exceptional customer traction, and a clear vision for the future. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on a company poised for continued success and to build a world-class accounting function that supports that growth.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience as a Controller or senior accounting leader in a high-growth SaaS environment, with a strong understanding of scaling accounting functions.
- • Demonstrated experience leading an accounting function through significant growth stages, ideally with exposure to preparing for or executing a public offering (IPO).
- • Deep expertise in US GAAP, including complex areas such as revenue recognition (ASC 606), stock-based compensation, and technical accounting.
- • Hands-on experience with month-end close, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit management (SOX readiness is a plus).
- • Strong people leadership and development skills, with a track record of mentoring and building high-performing accounting teams.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary and significant equity package.
- • 10-year exercise window for stock options.
- • Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) with encouragement to take it.
- • Minimum 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
- • Generous budget for equipment, software, and home office setup.
- • $100/month education stipend, with additional coverage for conferences and professional development with manager approval.
- • Top-tier health insurance for employees and dependents with 100% of premiums covered by Ashby (US-based employees).
- • 401k match (US-based employees).
