📋 Description

• Lead and grow a team of senior data platform engineers building Kraken's real-time streaming infrastructure, which powers decision-making across one of the world's largest digital asset exchanges by processing billions of events daily.
• Own the architecture and roadmap for high-volume data systems using technologies like Kafka, Spark, Iceberg, RisingWave, and Apache Flink, ensuring scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient data flow for trading, risk, compliance, analytics, and product teams.
• Drive adoption of AI-powered automation in data workflows, including intelligent monitoring, anomaly detection, self-healing pipelines, and LLM-integrated tooling to increase team efficiency and data quality.
• Partner with ML/AI, analytics, and product engineering teams to deliver platform capabilities that accelerate their work, while evolving the data lake and warehouse to support both batch and streaming workloads seamlessly.
• Set technical direction, mentor and develop top-tier remote engineering talent, and foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and servant leadership across a globally distributed team.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years in data engineering, platform engineering, or distributed systems, with at least 3 years managing engineering teams.
• Experience building data lakes in AWS using Spark, Athena, Iceberg, Parquet, Presto, including data modeling, data quality, and self-service tooling.
• Strong expertise in real-time data systems at scale, including Kafka, Spark Streaming, Debezium, and CDC pipelines.
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities across stakeholders (product, finance, compliance, analytics) and align platform investments with business needs.
• Strong communicator skilled at explaining technical trade-offs and roadmap decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience designing or adopting AI/ML-powered automation in data workflows, such as pipeline orchestration, intelligent monitoring, or LLM-integrated tooling.
• Proficiency in Python, Scala, or Java in production data platform environments.
• Solid understanding of cloud-native data infrastructure on AWS (Glue, Athena, S3, EMR, Lambda) or equivalent.
• Track record of managing, recruiting, and developing high-performing remote engineering teams.
• Ability to translate long-term platform vision into executable quarterly roadmaps.
• Servant-leadership mindset focused on coaching, unblocking, and growing engineers.
