- • Join Parafin Inc., a rapidly growing Series C company backed by prominent venture capitalists, on a mission to empower small businesses by providing them with essential financial tools through the platforms they already use. We are revolutionizing access to finance for small businesses, which are the bedrock of our economy but often underserved by traditional banking institutions. Our innovative technology integrates seamlessly with partners like DoorDash, Amazon, Worldpay, and Mindbody, offering fast, flexible funding, streamlined spend management, and valuable savings tools directly to their small business users. Parafin handles the entire complex ecosystem of capital markets, underwriting, servicing, compliance, and customer support, allowing our partners to focus on their core business.
- • As a Data Scientist at Parafin, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of small business finance. Data is at the heart of our operations, providing critical insights into the financial health of small businesses. This allows us to build fair, automated, and broadly accessible financial services. As Parafin experiences significant growth, the volume and richness of our data will expand exponentially, amplifying the positive impact we can have on our customers and the overall trajectory of the business.
- • The Data Science team at Parafin is a dynamic group comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds, including PhDs from top institutions and extensive professional experience at leading tech companies such as Stripe, Square, Plaid, Coinbase, Robinhood, CERN, Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, Faire, Segment, Facebook, and Google. Our team culture is built on enthusiasm, a healthy skepticism, and a deep respect for data. We foster an environment that values first-principles thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to craftsmanship. Our co-founders, with their backgrounds as data scientists at Robinhood, instilled a data-driven ethos from the company's inception.
- • In this role, you will drive significant impact by leading projects from conception to deployment. You will be expected to rapidly acquire new methodologies, apply them across various business functions, and implement them with robustness and scalability. While you will develop deep expertise in specific areas, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to projects across different domains as business priorities evolve. Your work will directly influence key areas of our business, including:
- • Underwriting: You will develop and refine the models and systems that determine which small businesses receive offers for our financial products and under what terms. This involves creating sophisticated predictive models, such as training quantile regression models to forecast revenue distributions and precisely size financing offers, or applying convex optimization techniques to generate competitive and data-driven financing terms.
- • Go-To-Market Strategy: You will collaborate closely with sales leadership to articulate the compelling value proposition of embedded finance to prospective partners. This may involve designing and executing analyses to quantify the impact of financial access on partner Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) using quasi-experimental methods, or running simulations to assess the risks and potential rewards of offering financial products on specific platforms.
- • Portfolio Monitoring and Servicing: You will build essential tooling to ensure the health and sustainability of our loan portfolio. This is crucial for driving growth for Parafin, our capital markets partners, and the small businesses we serve. Projects in this area could include estimating survival curves to predict cohort loss rates, or deploying advanced techniques like Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically identify potential bankruptcies by analyzing web data.
- • Beyond these core responsibilities, you will contribute to the team's growth by actively participating in recruiting exceptional talent, enhancing our internal tools and infrastructure, and supporting your colleagues through regular knowledge-sharing seminars and constructive project reviews. You will be a key player in fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment.
- • We are seeking individuals who approach data analysis with a critical, intellectually honest perspective, capable of designing concise metrics that effectively guide decision-making. You should be proficient in utilizing robust causal inference methods and developing valid, predictive machine learning models. A strong business acumen is essential, enabling you to identify and prioritize critical business problems, solve them effectively using appropriate data science techniques, and anticipate the broader impact of your work on financial performance, customer satisfaction, and regulatory compliance.
- • An engineering mindset is highly valued, encompassing the ability to write legible, reliable, and well-tested code, as well as the initiative to build or source tools that enhance team efficiency and contribute to the design of our model and data infrastructure. Leadership and collaboration are key; you will be expected to embody Parafin's core values of efficiency, intellectual honesty, accountability, and empathy, building trusted relationships with stakeholders, diligently documenting your work, actively seeking feedback, and proactively sharing your learnings. While management experience is a plus, a strong focus on execution, rigorous project scoping, and a sense of urgency are paramount to success in this role.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
- • Proven experience in statistical reasoning, causal inference, and developing predictive machine learning models.
- • Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to identify, prioritize, and solve complex business problems using data science techniques.
- • Strong software engineering skills, including writing clean, tested, and reliable code, and experience with data infrastructure or tooling.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary and equity grant (Senior Level: $190k-$230k base + equity; Senior Level: $240k-$300k base + equity).
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- • Flexible work environment with work-from-home options.
- • Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid parental leave.
- • Additional perks including commuter benefits, free lunches, and an employee assistance program.
