Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • Serve as a trusted technical presence in Discord and GitHub, answering user questions, unblocking developers, and identifying recurring pain points to inform product and documentation improvements.
  • Curate and maintain the Coder template registry by auditing coverage gaps, prioritizing high-need templates for platform engineers, and ensuring high-use templates remain up to date.
  • Create and publish first-party templates for key stacks including Python, Node, Go, Rust, and Java, as well as reference templates for Docker, Kubernetes, Proxmox, AWS, and bare metal environments.
  • Review community pull requests for the registry with clear, constructive feedback, maintaining quality standards while biasing toward merging valuable contributions.
  • Strengthen registry health by maintaining CI, linting, and automated testing pipelines aligned with the evolution of the Terraform provider.
  • Deliver live and recorded product demos at conferences (e.g., KubeCon, Open Source Summit, SCaLE, FOSDEM), meetups, and online events, grounded in real user workflows rather than slide decks.
  • Build stable, publicly accessible demo environments backed by GitHub repositories so users can clone, deploy, and learn independently.
  • Design and maintain hardware demos using physical devices such as Raspberry Pi, Intel NUCs, and home lab servers to demonstrate Coder’s capabilities in real-world settings.
  • Audit and improve community-facing documentation, focusing on the end-to-end journey from installation to first productive workspace to reduce activation drop-off.
  • Write deep-dive guides for complex scenarios including Docker-in-Docker, air-gapped deployments, multi-region setups, GPU workloads, and enterprise IdP integrations.
  • Partner with product managers and technical writers to ensure community documentation is accurate, usable, and complete.
  • Identify and launch community programs such as university partnerships, community funds, home lab licenses, platform engineering roundtables, or bounty programs that deepen engagement.
  • Create end-to-end tutorials for real-world workflows like migrating from local development to Coder, setting up AI coding agents, and running ephemeral PR environments.
  • Build and maintain a library of reference deployments that illustrate best practices for common deployment targets and infrastructure configurations.
  • Turn frequently asked questions into durable, self-service resources such as guides, scripts, or templates to accelerate future user onboarding.
  • Monitor developer sentiment across Hacker News, Reddit, LinkedIn, and similar channels to surface actionable community signals to internal teams.
  • Translate community feedback into prioritized insights for product, engineering, docs, and marketing teams to improve the developer experience.
  • Balance self-serve support with direct engagement to ensure users can progress quickly with or without contacting Coder.
  • Collaborate with marketing to produce blog posts, social media clips, podcast appearances, and launch announcements that extend the reach of community-driven content.
  • Track and report on key community metrics including OSS deployments with 20+ active users, weekly installs, activation rates, community message volume, and champion identification.
  • Ensure all community initiatives are measurable, scalable, and contribute to Coder’s north star: highly engaged open-source deployments that drive enterprise adoption.

🎯 Requirements

  • Software or platform engineering background with hands-on experience writing code, managing servers, and troubleshooting technical systems.
  • Strong practitioner empathy and ability to meet developers, platform engineers, and self-hosters where they are in their technical journey.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% for conferences, events, and in-person demos.
  • Proven experience participating in technical communities as a contributor, moderator, maintainer, or trusted technical presence.
  • Strong technical writing skills with ability to simplify complex processes into clear, actionable documentation.
  • Bias for action: ability to identify broken or missing elements and take ownership to resolve them without waiting for direction.

🏖️ Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape the open-source developer experience for a platform used by enterprise platform engineers.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge AI software development and autonomous coding technologies.
  • Flexibility to design and own community programs that compound over time and drive measurable impact.
  • Access to AI tooling for take-home assessments during the hiring process, with transparent guidelines on permitted use.
  • Transparent, human-led interview process with no AI-driven hiring decisions.
  • Work with a team committed to equal opportunity and inclusive hiring practices.
