đź“‹ Description
- • As Director of Strategic Communications at DuckDuckGo, you will lead the company’s external communications strategy to amplify its mission of raising the standard of trust online, ensuring every message reinforces brand credibility, user advocacy, and long-term growth in a competitive privacy-focused market.
- • You will define what DuckDuckGo says, where it says it, and why it matters by crafting an integrated communications strategy that aligns earned media, social, owned content, partnerships, community engagement, and executive visibility with business objectives, directly influencing brand perception and user acquisition.
- • Day to day, you will identify and develop high-impact stories that align with business goals, selecting the right channels, audiences, and timing to maximize reach and resonance across global user bases.
- • You will concept, plan, and execute tentpole communications campaigns from ideation through execution and measurement, ensuring each initiative delivers clear KPIs such as share of voice, sentiment lift, and engagement metrics.
- • You will design and run sustained communications campaigns that increase cultural relevancy, drive top-of-mind awareness, and deepen user affinity by transforming casual users into passionate brand advocates.
- • You will translate complex technical product features — such as app tracking protection, private search, and browser privacy tools — into compelling, audience-first narratives that resonate with everyday consumers, privacy advocates, and mainstream audiences alike.
- • You will build and mobilize communities of user advocates, turning satisfied users into active brand ambassadors who organically extend DuckDuckGo’s reach through word-of-mouth and social sharing.
- • You will position the CEO and senior leaders as thought leaders through strategic placements in podcasts, speaking engagements, op-eds, and media appearances, enhancing credibility and visibility in tech and policy circles.
- • You will drive cross-functional coordination with product, engineering, marketing, policy, and corporate leadership to ensure messaging is timely, accurate, and amplified effectively across launches, policy updates, and crisis moments.
- • You will advise on tactical communications projects, remove bottlenecks, and optimize team throughput by evolving processes, playbooks, and templates that increase efficiency and repeatability.
- • You will define meaningful KPIs — including share of voice, sentiment analysis, engagement rates, and attribution models — and build reporting systems that clearly demonstrate the impact of communications efforts on business outcomes.
- • You will operate with high independence in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment, proactively connecting communications work to company objectives while navigating competitive pressures and shifting media landscapes.
- • About the team and company: You will join a remote-first, profitable team of 300+ at DuckDuckGo, a company that has been profitable since 2014 with over $100M in annual revenue, where trust, inclusivity, and empowered ownership are cultural cornerstones.
- • You will work within a Marketing & Communications team that values end-to-end ownership, where every member scopes, executes, and retrospects on their projects with full accountability.
- • In this role, you will achieve mastery in strategic communications leadership, shaping how a globally recognized privacy brand communicates its values and innovations to the world.
- • You will leave a lasting legacy by evolving the communications function into a scalable, high-impact engine that not only supports business goals but also advances DuckDuckGo’s mission to make privacy simple and accessible for everyone.
🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of communications experience with 5+ years in leadership roles at consumer-facing technology companies serving large user bases.
- • Expert-level proficiency across the full communications playbook: earned media, social, owned content, partnerships, executive visibility, and community engagement, with proven ability to integrate these channels into a unified strategy tied to business outcomes.
- • Demonstrated success in translating complex technical products into compelling, audience-first narratives that resonate with mainstream consumers, privacy-conscious users, and advocates.
- • Strong press instincts, narrative development skills, and experience positioning CEOs or senior leaders as thought leaders through media appearances, podcasts, op-eds, and speaking engagements.
- • Highly organized with a track record of managing complex, multi-workstream initiatives, maintaining accountability to deadlines, and driving operational efficiency through process improvement.
- • Fluency in defining and measuring meaningful KPIs such as share of voice, sentiment, engagement, and attribution, and building reporting that demonstrates communications impact on business goals.

- • Fully remote-first work environment with no core hours, enabling flexibility while maintaining an average 40-hour weekly commitment.
- • Opportunities to attend two annual in-person events: an all-hands meetup and a team retreat (each 4–5 days), fostering connection and culture despite remote distribution.
