📋 Description

• Lead a small, cross-functional engineering team owning an end-to-end product area such as card issuing, payments, or onboarding, ensuring technical ownership and delivery through Shape Up cycles.
• Stay technically engaged by writing code on non-critical paths, reviewing PRs, and pairing with engineers to maintain empathy and provide grounded coaching.
• Shape vague product pitches into clearly scoped, executable work by collaborating with product leads to define architecture, tradeoffs, and success criteria before development begins.
• Own accountability for critical technical decisions in systems where correctness is non-negotiable due to the movement of real money, prioritizing maintainability, observability, and scalability over premature optimization.
• Foster a high-autonomy, psychologically safe team environment where engineers take ownership of technical direction, feel empowered to raise issues, and focus on impact over busyness.
• Drive engineer development in a high-trust setting by identifying growth opportunities, supporting skill advancement, and mentoring individuals to lead technical decisions they previously wouldn’t have touched.
• Hire engineers who thrive in functional programming environments, particularly those experienced with or willing to learn Clojure, and assess cultural and technical fit for a distributed systems and fintech-constrained domain.
• Identify and remove systemic blockers before they derail delivery, improving team processes such as requirement shaping, estimation accuracy, and feedback loops to increase velocity and quality.
• Collaborate with product leads and stakeholders to ensure engineers understand the ‘why’ behind what they’re building, connecting technical work directly to real customer problems and business outcomes.
• Maintain high code quality by prioritizing refactoring rough edges over polishing already working code, and ensure systems remain reliable, observable, and maintainable under financial regulatory constraints.
• Scale engineering culture without losing core values by hiring people who raise the bar, reinforcing autonomy, transparency, and mission-driven execution as the team grows.
• Operate in an async, remote-first environment with full flexibility, managing team performance and delivery without micromanagement, and trusting engineers to make informed decisions.
• Contribute to building an inclusive and representative team environment aligned with Griffin’s goal to proportionally reflect the diversity of the UK working population across race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, nationality, neurodiversity, and religious beliefs.

🎯 Requirements

• Experience leading engineering teams in functional programming languages such as Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, or Scala
• Proven track record managing engineering teams in fintech domains including payments, banking, card issuing, or related areas with compliance and financial correctness requirements
• Demonstrated ability to build and scale high-performing, autonomous teams in startup or fast-growth environments
• Experience shaping product requirements alongside product leads and translating vague objectives into executable technical work
• Comfort working in a remote-first, async culture with full autonomy and minimal hierarchy
• Strong technical proficiency to review code, pair on problems, and contribute meaningfully to systems written in Clojure or similar functional languages
