- • As the Engineering Manager for the Scoring squad at Zoe, you will serve as the technical anchor bridging complex scientific research with seamless user experiences, leading a distributed team of engineers to translate biological data into personalized member scores that drive real-world health impact.
- • You will own the professional development of 3 engineers through weekly 1:1s, quarterly performance check-ins, and bi-yearly reviews, while staying hands-on in code reviews, system design, and cross-functional collaboration with Product, Design, Nutrition Science, and Data Science teams to ensure technical excellence and scientific rigor in every release.
- • You will lead the technical roadmap and system design for the Scoring domain, ensuring infrastructure scalability on Google Cloud Platform using Kubernetes, Terraform, PostgreSQL, and Redis, while maintaining a builder mindset by actively participating in implementation and debugging complex distributed systems.
- • You will partner closely with a Product Manager and Product Designer to shape the product roadmap, translating scientific insights into user-facing features, and act as the primary technical liaison between engineering and science teams to productionize machine learning models into reliable, high-performance software.
- • You will thrive in Zoe’s diverse, cross-functional engineering culture of ~40 engineers across the UK and EU, where curiosity, openness, and empowerment are valued, and where you’ll contribute to a team that is 40% female and 60% male, leveraging varied backgrounds to solve complex challenges and serve a global community.
- • You will grow as a technical leader who remains deeply engaged with the craft—balancing people leadership with active execution—while gaining experience in productionizing science at scale, influencing architectural decisions, and shaping how engineering collaborates with product and science to deliver impactful member experiences in a remote-first environment with quarterly London travel.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience leading small engineering teams while maintaining a hands-on builder mindset, including regular participation in code reviews and technical problem-solving alongside engineers.
- • Deep expertise in distributed systems, API design, and data modeling, with proficiency in Kotlin and Python (for ML services), and familiarity with React Native, Google Cloud Platform, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
- • Strong people leadership skills, including delivering constructive feedback in 1:1s, navigating performance cycles, and fostering engineer growth through structured development conversations.
- • Demonstrated ability to thrive in cross-functional environments, effectively communicating with Product, Design, Nutrition Science, and Data Science teams to align technical execution with scientific and user experience goals.
- • Passion for productionizing science—turning complex research models and biological data into reliable, scalable, user-facing software systems.
- • Permanent right to work and live in the UK or EU, with willingness to travel to London quarterly; sponsorship is not available for this role.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to lead and grow a high-impact engineering squad at a mission-driven company translating cutting-edge science into personalized health insights for a global community.
- • Remote-first work arrangement across the UK and EU with quarterly travel to London for team collaboration and connection.
- • Access to a modern, cutting-edge tech stack including Kotlin, Python, React Native, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, PostgreSQL, and Redis.
- • Structured professional development through regular 1:1s, quarterly check-ins, and bi-yearly performance reviews focused on long-term career growth.
- • Collaborative, inclusive engineering culture that values diversity (40% female, 60% male), curiosity, openness, and empowerment, with strong cross-functional partnerships across Product, Design, and Science.
- • Transparent and reflective hiring process designed to assess real-world Engineering Manager competencies through live coding, system design, and leadership interviews.
