📋 Description

• As an Engineering Manager at Stepful, you will lead a team of Product Engineers responsible for building the end-to-end experiences that empower learners to succeed—from enrollment and program completion to securing their first healthcare job. This role is critical to Stepful’s mission of expanding access to high-demand healthcare careers for underserved communities through affordable, AI-supported, instructor-led online training.
• You will operate as a hands-on leader, dedicating approximately 20% of your time to direct technical contributions such as code reviews, architecture design, and individual coding, while spending the remainder on team development, cross-functional collaboration, and driving product outcomes aligned with company goals.
• Your leadership will directly impact Stepful’s core product pillars: Learning Experience (adaptive learning and AI feedback), Careers (ranking algorithms and partner matching with employers like CVS, NY-Presbyterian, and Walgreens), and Human Connection (LLM-driven internal tools that enhance student support and engagement).
• You will partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations teams to ensure discovery, planning, and execution are tightly aligned, balancing speed with quality and maintaining a bias for action in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
• A key part of your role will be fostering a high-trust, psychologically safe team culture grounded in Stepful’s four core values: Care first, Learn quickly, Build together, and Own it—ensuring engineers feel supported, empowered, and motivated to do their best work.
• You will be responsible for recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and developing engineers through regular feedback, personalized growth plans, and opportunity matching, helping to scale Stepful’s builder culture as the company grows post-Series B.
• You will drive continuous improvement by removing blockers, refining engineering processes, and guiding technical roadmap decisions that uphold high standards of quality, reliability, and scalability across the platform.
• By combining technical depth with people leadership, you will help Shape not only what Stepful builds but how it builds it—creating sustainable velocity, improving developer experience, and enabling the team to deliver impact at scale during a period of rapid growth.

🎯 Requirements

• 2+ years of direct experience managing software engineers
• 6+ years of experience building software products with a strong full-stack engineering background
• Proven ability to partner effectively with Product and Design teams through the full discovery, planning, and execution lifecycle
• A builder mindset: eagerness to engage in code reviews, ask technical questions, and contribute to architecture and system design
• Passion for developing others and helping engineers grow in their careers through feedback, mentorship, and development planning
