Engineering Manager (Institutional - Exchange)

📋 Description

• • Lead and mentor a high-caliber team of approximately 8 engineers responsible for building and operating the core trading systems that power Coinbase's Institutional Exchange platform.
• • Take full ownership of critical exchange components, including order entry gateways (e.g., FIX protocol), the matching engine, real-time market data feeds, and exchange APIs, ensuring their robust performance and reliability.
• • Drive the development and enhancement of ultra-low-latency, high-throughput, and highly reliable distributed systems designed for 24/7/365 operation, meeting the stringent demands of institutional clients.
• • Collaborate closely with Product Management, Infrastructure/SRE teams, and senior leadership to translate strategic objectives into actionable quarterly deliverables and technical roadmaps.
• • Establish and refine team processes and mechanisms to ensure high-quality execution, encompassing effective planning, code reviews, rigorous testing strategies, safe deployment practices, efficient on-call rotations, and thorough postmortem analyses.
• • Define, monitor, and maintain key operating metrics, including Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Indicators (SLIs), latency, availability, and error budgets, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to performance targets.
• • Provide swift and effective triage and resolution for incidents and customer-impacting issues, demonstrating clear ownership, proactive communication, and a commitment to minimizing disruption.
• • Foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning within the team, actively coaching and mentoring engineers to elevate their skills, grow their careers, and develop into future technical leaders.
• • Contribute to the strategic vision for the Coinbase Institutional Exchange, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement in trading infrastructure, performance, and scalability.
• • Engage in hands-on technical contributions when necessary, including code reviews, technical design documentation, participation in on-call rotations, incident leadership, and bug triaging/troubleshooting, ensuring a deep understanding of the systems being managed.
• • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless integration of new features and services into the existing exchange infrastructure, maintaining stability and performance.
• • Champion best practices in software development, system design, and operational excellence within the team and across the broader engineering organization.
• • Contribute to the recruitment and onboarding of top engineering talent, helping to build and scale the team to meet the growing demands of the business.
• • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in high-frequency trading, distributed systems, and blockchain technology to inform technical strategy and decision-making.
• • Ensure compliance with all relevant security protocols and regulatory requirements for financial trading systems.
• • Drive a culture of accountability and ownership, empowering the team to take pride in delivering mission-critical systems that underpin the global cryptoeconomy.
