• • As an Engineering Manager for the Storage Control Plane team at Airbnb, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the reliability, automation, and scalability of our critical distributed transactional database infrastructure. This pivotal role involves leading a high-performing, diverse team of software engineers dedicated to building sophisticated software solutions that automate and streamline database operations. Your team's work will directly impact the stability and efficiency of Airbnb's data services, empowering builders across the company to create exceptional guest and host experiences backed by real-time data.
• • Your core responsibility will be to guide your team in developing and maintaining the control plane services that manage the lifecycle of our distributed databases. This includes orchestrating node lifecycles for storage, compute, and metadata management nodes, ensuring high availability and seamless operations. You will oversee the development of operators that automate complex processes such as cluster provisioning, ongoing operations, and disaster recovery, significantly reducing manual effort and potential for error.
• • A key focus will be on enhancing configuration management to proactively detect and rectify configuration drifts, maintaining the integrity and performance of our database clusters. Furthermore, you will champion open-source development practices within the team, making the process of building, testing, and deploying database images and CICD pipelines frictionless for both internal developers and the broader open-source community.
• • You will also be instrumental in designing and implementing robust blue/green deployment and rollback strategies for major version upgrades, ensuring minimal downtime and risk during critical updates. Looking ahead, your vision will drive the platformization of our database services, providing intuitive constructs and semantics that enable customers to self-manage their databases effectively, thereby reducing operational toil and improving overall efficiency.
• • This role requires a strategic leader who can collaborate effectively with peers within the Online Data organization, as well as with numerous partner teams across Airbnb's Product, Compute, Networking, Security, and Reliability infrastructure groups. You will also engage with external vendors and open-source communities, representing Airbnb's interests and contributing to the broader technological landscape.
• • A typical day will involve working closely with Technical Leads and your team to define and execute a compelling vision and a multi-year roadmap for the control plane area. You will actively participate in technical design discussions, serving as a critical sounding board for your engineers and ensuring architectural soundness. You will synthesize complex technical information to effectively communicate progress, challenges, and strategic direction to upper management.
• • You will foster strong alignment with other teams within Online Data, such as ORM and SRE, clarifying each team's charter and ensuring seamless integration of core capabilities. A significant part of your role will be dedicated to talent acquisition, mentoring individual contributors, and managing their career development, including promotions and skill enhancement. You will cultivate a culture that balances the need for rigor with the agility required to "move fast" responsibly, from initial design through code reviews to production deployment.
