  • • Lead a high-performing, fully-distributed engineering squad that builds the infrastructure powering Remote’s global payroll, benefits and compliance platform serving thousands of companies and tens of thousands of employees across 170+ countries.
  • • Own the technical roadmap for your domain—translating ambitious product goals into clear, sequenced epics and stories that deliver measurable customer value every two weeks while maintaining 99.9% uptime and sub-second API response times.
  • • Coach and mentor 5-8 engineers ranging from junior to staff level, running weekly 1:1s, quarterly growth plans and continuous feedback loops that turn individual contributors into confident technical leaders who can operate autonomously anywhere on the planet.
  • • Drive a culture of psychological safety and inclusive decision-making where every voice is heard regardless of time zone, ensuring that code reviews, architecture discussions and retrospectives are run asynchronously yet remain energizing and decisive.
  • • Partner with Product, Design, Data and Compliance teams to define OKRs that balance rapid feature delivery with long-term scalability, security and regulatory requirements spanning GDPR, SOC-2, ISO-27001 and local labor laws on five continents.
  • • Establish and monitor SLIs/SLOs for critical services such as payroll calculation engines, tax-withholding APIs and contractor onboarding flows, using real-time dashboards and automated alerting to pre-empt incidents before customers feel them.
  • • Champion engineering excellence by introducing or refining practices like continuous deployment, trunk-based development, feature flags, canary releases and chaos testing—reducing lead time for changes from days to minutes while keeping defect escape rate under 0.5%.
  • • Contribute hands-on to the codebase when needed—whether debugging a race condition in our Elixir/Phoenix monolith, optimizing a Rust microservice that calculates social-security withholdings, or writing Terraform modules to spin up new regions in AWS.
  • • Represent Remote at global conferences, meetups and open-source communities, sharing lessons learned from running a 100% remote engineering organization at scale and attracting top-tier talent who align with our mission of enabling life- and location-agnostic work.
  • • Collaborate with People Enablement and Total Rewards to implement equitable promotion and compensation processes that eliminate bias, ensuring every engineer understands how to progress from IC to Staff to Principal while maintaining pay parity across all geographies.
  • • Foster cross-team knowledge sharing through internal tech talks, guilds and documentation sprints, turning tribal knowledge into living architecture decision records (ADRs) that allow any engineer to onboard to a new service in under 30 minutes.
  • • Instill a security-first mindset across the team, leading threat-modeling sessions, secure-coding workshops and quarterly pen-test remediation that keeps customer payroll data safer than traditional banks while still shipping at startup speed.
  • • Balance technical debt and innovation by allocating 20% of sprint capacity to refactoring, tooling and experimentation, ensuring the platform remains resilient as transaction volume grows 3Ă— year-over-year and new countries come online every quarter.
  • • Act as the escalation point for high-severity incidents, running blameless post-mortems that convert outages into systemic improvements and feeding lessons back into design guidelines, runbooks and automated safeguards that prevent recurrence.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 7+ years of backend or full-stack engineering experience with at least 2 years leading distributed teams across multiple time zones.
  • • Proven track record of delivering scalable, secure SaaS platforms handling sensitive financial or HR data (payroll, benefits, tax, fintech, etc.).
  • • Expertise in at least one modern backend language (Elixir, Go, Rust, Python, Node) plus cloud-native infrastructure on AWS or GCP.
  • • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers from junior to senior levels and to build inclusive, high-psychological-safety cultures.
  • • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; able to run effective asynchronous planning, reviews and retrospectives.
  • • Nice to have: experience with global compliance, multi-currency payroll, or distributed systems at 99.9%+ availability.
