Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Become the linguistic backbone behind the next generation of European French AI experiences. As a European French Linguist – Language Services Specialist at Appen, you will sit at the intersection of language, technology, and human insight, ensuring that AI models understand, generate, and evaluate French with native-level nuance and cultural authenticity.
  • • Your day-to-day work will revolve around running and interpreting sophisticated linguistic analysis reports (full training provided) that directly influence model performance. You will surface patterns in phonological variation, syntactic ambiguity, and semantic drift, translating raw metrics into actionable recommendations for data collection, annotation guidelines, and model fine-tuning.
  • • You will review large volumes of French content—ranging from conversational prompts to technical documentation—flagging linguistic ambiguities, grammatical inconsistencies, and culturally inappropriate phrasing. Every correction you make ripples outward, improving the reliability and safety of generative AI systems used by millions of European French speakers.
  • • Collaboration is central to the role. You will join daily stand-ups with cross-functional teams that include computational linguists, data scientists, and product managers located across EMEA and North America. Your insights will feed directly into reinforcement-learning-with-human-feedback (RLHF) pipelines, supervised fine-tuning datasets, and bias-mitigation strategies.
  • • Quality assurance is more than a checklist; it is a mindset. You will design and execute spot-checks on annotated corpora, create gold-standard reference sets, and mentor junior annotators on best practices for European French phonology, morphology, and pragmatics. Your feedback loops will tighten annotation guidelines and reduce error rates by double-digit percentages.
  • • You will leverage Appen’s proprietary AI-assisted annotation platform to triage data, visualize linguistic distributions, and export curated datasets in JSON, YAML, or XML. Comfort with Unix command-line tools will allow you to automate repetitive tasks—such as batch file validation or regex-based pattern extraction—freeing you to focus on higher-order linguistic challenges.
  • • Continuous learning is baked into the 12-month contract. The first 2–3 weeks consist of immersive onboarding covering Appen’s quality frameworks, client-specific style guides, and advanced phonological analysis techniques. Monthly upskilling sessions keep you current with evolving generative-AI methodologies and European French linguistic trends.
  • • Impact is measurable. Your contributions will directly affect the fluency scores, safety ratings, and user-satisfaction metrics of large language models deployed by Fortune 100 technology companies. Success stories from your work will be showcased in quarterly business reviews and may influence global data-collection roadmaps.
  • • Autonomy is balanced with support. While you will work remotely across the EU, you will have a dedicated project manager, weekly 1:1 coaching, and access to an internal Slack community of 200+ linguists. Clear KPIs—such as annotation throughput, error-rate reduction, and report turnaround time—ensure transparency and recognition.
  • • Finally, you will champion ethical AI. You will flag potential biases related to regional dialects (e.g., Belgian vs. Parisian French), sociolects, or gendered language, ensuring that datasets reflect the full diversity of European French speakers. Your vigilance helps Appen maintain its reputation as a trusted, responsible AI partner.
