Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Be the first, friendly voice of Mercy Health as a Financial Counselor (Patient Access) working fully REMOTE from anywhere in the Eastern time zone. Every day you will guide patients and families through the critical first step of their care journey—turning confusion into confidence and anxiety into assurance.
- • Own the complete patient-entry experience: schedule appointments across multiple Mercy facilities, register new and returning patients, verify insurance benefits, secure pre-authorizations, and complete financial clearance—all while safeguarding the most accurate demographic, insurance, and clinical data in Epic and other hospital information systems.
- • Serve as a compassionate financial advocate, explaining coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and payment options in plain language. Proactively collect pre-visit deposits, set up payment plans, and connect uninsured or under-insured patients to Mercy financial-assistance programs so that no one delays needed care due to cost concerns.
- • Master the ever-changing landscape of commercial payers, Medicare, Medicaid, and Mercy’s own financial policies. Maintain 98 %+ accuracy on insurance verification, prior-authorization, and registration edits to prevent claim denials and protect Mercy’s revenue cycle.
- • Build bridges between patients, physicians, nurses, coders, and billing teams. Use your polished phone etiquette and written communication skills to de-escalate concerns, resolve eligibility roadblocks, and celebrate small wins that keep the continuum of care moving smoothly.
- • Leverage advanced scheduling software, real-time eligibility tools, and AI-driven financial-counseling platforms to streamline workflows. Contribute ideas in daily huddles and monthly Kaizen events to reduce patient wait times and improve first-call resolution rates.
- • Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA, CMS, Joint Commission, and state regulations. Document every interaction thoroughly so that Mercy’s audit-readiness score remains above 95 %.
- • Thrive in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment where you will handle 40–60 patient interactions per day, meet same-day registration deadlines, and still find moments to add a personal touch—like remembering a patient’s preferred nickname or upcoming birthday.
- • Model Mercy’s Mission, Values, and Service Standards in every interaction. Whether you are calming a nervous parent at 7 a.m. or helping a senior citizen navigate Medicare Advantage at 7 p.m., your empathy and professionalism reflect the 195-year legacy of the Sisters of Mercy.
- • Grow your career through Mercy’s tuition support, internal mobility programs, and leadership pathways. High performers can advance to Senior Financial Counselor, Team Lead, or Revenue Cycle Analyst roles within 12–24 months.
🎯 Requirements
- • High-school diploma required; some college coursework in healthcare administration, business, or related field preferred
- • 1–3 years of clerical or customer-service experience; prior medical terminology and insurance-verification experience strongly preferred
- • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and chat with patients, clinicians, and payers
- • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Epic or similar EMR, and 10-key data entry; typing speed of 45 WPM with 98 % accuracy
- • Capacity to work remotely with reliable high-speed internet, secure workspace, and ability to lift up to 50 lbs when attending occasional on-site meetings or training
🏖️ Benefits
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage effective on day one for full-time and part-time (32 + hrs) teammates
- • Generous paid-time-off package plus paid holidays and flexible scheduling to support work-life balance
- • 100 % tuition support for approved college courses and certifications, plus matched 403(b) retirement plan
- • Career-growth programs, remote-work equipment stipend, and access to Mercy’s award-winning wellness and mental-health resources
