Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a FinOps Engineer at PostHog, you will transform cloud cost management from a reactive, janitorial function into a proactive, strategic enabler of engineering efficiency and product competitiveness, directly impacting the company’s ability to lower prices and improve margins through architectural influence.
- • You will own the strategy and implementation of cost-aware engineering practices by building attribution systems (tagging, showbacks), automating cost governance, and partnering with senior engineers to optimize high-impact infrastructure decisions like ClickHouse compression and Kafka partitioning, where your insights drive seven-figure outcomes.
- • You will partner closely with Finance to explain cost variances, maintain clean allocation models, and translate technical spend into business-relevant margin analysis by product line, ensuring cost becomes a first-class metric alongside latency and availability.
- • You will foster a culture of continuous cost optimization by enabling 100+ engineers to make 1% better decisions daily through self-service tooling, automation, and education—shifting FinOps left into design docs rather than billing cycles.
- • You will work within PostHog’s uniquely transparent, autonomous, and async-first culture, where you’re empowered to initiate change, challenge norms, and build weird, high-leverage solutions that align with the company’s mission to ship every product companies need to run their business.
- • You will grow into a trusted advisor who bridges engineering and finance, developing rare hybrid expertise in cloud economics, Kubernetes cost allocation, CI/CD cost implications, and financial forecasting—making you indispensable in scaling PostHog’s infrastructure responsibly.
🎯 Requirements
- • Previous experience in FinOps, cloud cost management, or cloud governance with proven ability to drive cost optimization at scale
- • Deep cloud fluency including understanding of cross-AZ data transfer, NAT gateway costs, and price-performance tradeoffs across instance families
- • Kubernetes expertise with practical experience in cost allocation, monitoring, and optimization in complex K8s environments
- • Strong communication and translation skills to effectively engage both engineers (on SQL, CI/CD, architecture) and finance leads (on forecasting, margin analysis)
- • Bias for action with demonstrated ability to automate cost governance tasks (e.g., tagging hygiene) via scripting rather than manual follow-ups
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote work with flexible hours and async-first culture, enabling deep focus and productivity without meeting overload
- • Equity compensation as part of a well-funded startup backed by top-tier investors, offering long-term upside in a mission-driven company
- • Transparent culture with access to revenue, board notes, fundraising plans, and salary data, fostering trust and informed decision-making
- • Opportunity to work on high-leverage infrastructure problems with direct impact on product pricing and customer value
- • Autonomy to initiate projects, partner with senior engineers, and shape FinOps as a strategic function rather than a cost-center afterthought
Skills & Technologies
About PostHog Inc.
PostHog provides an open-source product analytics platform that lets teams track user behavior, run A/B tests, and gather feedback without sending data to third parties. The self-hosted or cloud service captures events, pageviews, feature flags, and session recordings, then surfaces insights through dashboards, funnels, retention, and cohort analysis. Engineers can instrument code once and non-technical teammates can query results using SQL or visual builders. The company maintains the core project under an MIT license and offers paid tiers for enterprise support, higher volumes, and advanced features such as correlation analysis, data pipelines, and team collaboration tools.
