📋 Description

• Architect and own the backbone of Phaselab’s next-generation eDiscovery platform, a system that Fortune 500 legal teams already rely on to slash document-production time and cost. You will design, build, and scale every backend service—from ingestion pipelines that chew through terabytes of litigation data to AI-driven search and ranking APIs that surface the right documents in milliseconds.
• Ship production-grade Python services that run on Kubernetes, provisioned with Terraform, and backed by Postgres and Elasticsearch clusters. You will write clean, test-covered code, craft efficient SQL and DSL queries, and tune indices so that complex legal queries return in sub-second time even when the dataset spans hundreds of millions of records.
• Lead the evolution of our data-ingestion engine. Today it processes native files, e-mail archives, chat exports, and OCR’d scans; tomorrow it will auto-classify privilege, detect PII, and generate privilege logs. You will extend the pipeline with new extractors, implement idempotent retries, and guarantee exactly-once semantics so customers trust every record that lands in their review workspace.
• Build and maintain the real-time event bus that keeps our React frontend, AI micro-services, and third-party integrations in sync. You will choose between Kafka, Pub/Sub, or Kinesis, set up schema registries, and ensure 99.9 % uptime so attorneys never lose their place in a 3 a.m. review sprint.
• Own observability end-to-end: deploy Prometheus metrics, structured logs, and distributed tracing; set SLOs and error budgets; wake up the pager only when it truly matters. When incidents do occur, you run blameless post-mortems and turn lessons into automated safeguards.
• Collaborate daily with the founders—Josh (ex-CTO of Chartbeat, scaled to $70 M ARR) and David (ex-COO of MIT-spinoff Cortico)—to translate customer pain into technical specs. You will join customer calls, see how a misplaced privilege marker can derail a $50 M deal, and then sprint to ship the fix that prevents it from ever happening again.
• Mentor future backend hires and establish engineering rituals—code reviews, design docs, weekly demos—that keep velocity high as the team grows from 4 to 40. Your documentation and architectural decisions will become the blueprint for the next generation of Phaselab engineers.
• Champion security and compliance. Our customers entrust us with their most sensitive data; you will implement encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access control, and SOC-2-ready audit trails so that legal teams can adopt Phaselab without a second thought.
• Iterate at lightning speed. Expect to merge your first pull request in week one, ship two major features in month one, and push daily or weekly releases thereafter. We prize impact over perfection and measure ourselves by how quickly we can turn an idea in Slack into value for customers.
• Enjoy deep product ownership. You are not handed Jira tickets—you discover problems, propose solutions, and see them through to delighted users. Whether that means adding a new export format demanded by a federal judge or shaving 200 ms off a query that partners run 10 000 times a day, you decide and you deliver.

🎯 Requirements

• 3+ years of backend development in Python, ideally in seed-to-Series B startups or similarly fast-moving environments
• Proven expertise with relational databases (Postgres) and search engines (Elasticsearch); you can write performant SQL, design indices, and debug slow queries
• Hands-on experience with modern infrastructure-as-code and container orchestration—Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines
• Bias for action: you ship early, measure impact, and iterate quickly based on customer feedback
• Extreme ownership mentality—you see projects through from conception to production and never let the ball drop
