As a Full Stack Software Engineer specializing in Applied AI, you will play a pivotal role in crafting and deploying innovative end-to-end solutions that underpin Perplexity's diverse AI applications. • Your responsibilities will encompass the design, development, and delivery of scalable, end-to-end AI features that are integral to core user experiences. This includes enhancing capabilities in areas such as information discovery, enabling deep research workflows, and implementing robust monetization strategies across Perplexity's suite of products. You will be instrumental in translating complex AI models into intuitive and powerful user-facing features.
• A significant aspect of this role involves building and evolving sophisticated full-stack systems. These systems will be responsible for integrating multiple third-party and in-house Sonar Large Language Models (LLMs). You will ensure seamless orchestration between these models, maintain high levels of robustness, and implement comprehensive observability for production systems, allowing for proactive monitoring and rapid issue resolution.
• You will also contribute to the development and maintenance of critical evaluation and experimentation platforms. These platforms are essential for rigorously measuring answer quality, assessing model performance, and quantifying product impact. Your work will support both online (live user interaction) and offline (controlled testing) workflows, providing data-driven insights to guide product development and AI model refinement.
• Collaboration is key at Perplexity. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including research scientists, product managers, designers, and infrastructure engineers. This collaborative environment will enable you to effectively translate the capabilities of frontier AI models into tangible, shipped user-facing features and essential internal tools.
• A continuous improvement mindset is expected. You will be tasked with optimizing the performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency of our AI-powered applications. This will involve thoughtful system design, implementing effective instrumentation for monitoring, and iterating based on performance data and user feedback.
• The role requires a hands-on approach to building production AI or agentic applications from inception to deployment. This includes expertise in areas such as tool calling, effective context engineering for LLMs, and seamless integration with modern LLM APIs. You should be comfortable navigating the complexities of AI application development.
• You will leverage strong backend and systems design skills, demonstrating a proven track record of making pragmatic trade-offs. This involves balancing competing priorities such as cost, latency, reliability, and quality in the context of real-world, high-stakes systems.
• Proficiency with modern web and product stacks is essential. You should be comfortable working across the entire stack, from data pipelines and infrastructure to user interface development. Experience with languages like Python, Go, Rust, and TypeScript, along with frameworks like FastAPI, and technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, vLLM, and AWS, will be highly valuable.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven experience building and deploying production-grade AI or agentic applications end-to-end, including proficiency with tool calling, context engineering, and modern LLM API integrations.
• Strong backend and systems design expertise, with a demonstrated ability to make practical trade-offs concerning cost, latency, reliability, and quality in real-world systems.
• Proficiency across the full stack, comfortable with modern web/product stacks (e.g., Python with a frontend framework), data, and infrastructure.
• Minimum of 4 years of industry experience in software or AI engineering, coupled with a self-directed, high-agency approach and a bias for shipping impactful product work.
