- • Lead and scale FAR.AI’s strategic communications function, owning the development and execution of a comprehensive communications strategy to inform policymakers, industry leaders, and the public on AI safety risks and solutions.
- • Direct a team of four communications specialists, providing mentorship, setting performance goals, and expanding the team as the division grows from a $1M annual budget.
- • Shape and maintain FAR.AI’s authoritative voice across all channels, ensuring messaging is consistent, credible, and aligned with the organization’s mission to advance safe and beneficial AI.
- • Build and manage media relations with top-tier journalists and outlets including the New York Times, Financial Times, MIT Technology Review, and Foreign Affairs to secure high-impact coverage, op-eds, and expert commentary.
- • Lead rapid-response communications to correct misinformation about AI safety and protect FAR.AI’s reputation as a trusted, neutral source in the field.
- • Elevate the public profiles of FAR.AI’s leadership and researchers by coaching them on media engagement, speaking, and platform presence to amplify thought leadership.
- • Own the organization’s editorial calendar across all platforms, aligning content with key research releases, events, and policy milestones such as the forthcoming AI model security leaderboard.
- • Manage FAR.AI’s website as the primary brand surface, redesigning and optimizing content structure and presentation to clearly communicate mission, research, and impact to diverse audiences.
- • Lead the strategy and execution of FAR.AI’s newsletter, defining its voice, editorial direction, and growth plan to establish it as a flagship channel for reaching policymakers and technical stakeholders.
- • Oversee organic and paid social media campaigns to expand reach, influence, and engagement across platforms, with measurable goals for audience growth and content performance.
- • Partner cross-functionally with research, events, and grantmaking teams to integrate communications into all organizational initiatives and ensure messaging coherence.
- • Represent FAR.AI at global industry events and conferences to build credibility as a leading voice in AI safety and strengthen partnerships with other organizations in the field.
- • Establish and steward a unified organizational narrative, equipping all staff with messaging frameworks and training to consistently represent FAR.AI’s mission in their external communications.
- • Manage relationships with external PR and digital agencies to extend reach and optimize visibility beyond internal capacity.
- • Monitor and measure the impact of communications efforts using data and feedback to refine strategy, improve outcomes, and demonstrate ROI to leadership.
- • Protect and enhance FAR.AI’s brand as a trusted employer and partner by ensuring all communications reflect integrity, neutrality, and technical rigor.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of professional experience in communications (e.g., public relations, science journalism, policy communication) or an operational role with significant communication elements
- • 2+ years of experience managing people and specialized teams (preferred) or proven ability to lead complex initiatives and align teams without formal authority
- • Demonstrated track record of setting strategic vision and executing end-to-end communications initiatives
- • Hands-on fluency across earned media, brand, and content to provide credible guidance and feedback
- • Strong interest in AI safety and willingness to learn technical concepts to communicate them effectively
- • Excellent strategic judgment and ability to manage multiple high-stakes projects and stakeholders simultaneously

- • Compensation range of $175,000–$260,000/year depending on experience and location

- • Visa sponsorship available for in-person roles in Berkeley, CA or Singapore
- • Employment via FAR.AI (501(c)(3)) in the US or Singapore; EOR or contractor arrangement for international hires

- • Full-time, long-term position with flexible remote work globally (4 hours overlap with 9am–5pm Pacific time)
