- • Serve as the senior HR strategist and trusted advisor to the Southern U.S. Division leadership team, translating conservation priorities into people strategies that accelerate impact across ten states (Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia).
- • Lead, coach, and inspire a distributed team of HR professionals who deliver end-to-end services—from transactional support to transformational talent initiatives—ensuring every employee experiences a seamless, equitable, and high-impact journey.
- • Act as the division’s primary change agent, designing and operationalizing large-scale organizational development programs that embed TNC’s global values of respect, belonging, and high performance into day-to-day culture.
- • Own the annual talent and succession planning cycle for a multicultural, geographically dispersed workforce of scientists, field staff, fundraisers, and policy experts; translate data-driven insights into concrete actions that close critical skill gaps and build robust leadership pipelines.
- • Partner with Talent Acquisition to architect inclusive recruiting strategies that attract top conservation talent, reduce time-to-fill, and measurably increase workforce diversity across race, gender identity, disability status, and lived experience.
- • Serve as the escalation point for complex employee-relations matters, conducting thorough, empathetic investigations and ensuring consistent application of policies, employment law, and risk-mitigation protocols across all ten business units.
- • Design and facilitate leadership development, DEI learning labs, and well-being initiatives that equip managers to cultivate psychologically safe teams and sustain high engagement in high-stress, field-based environments.
- • Translate global people priorities—such as pay equity analyses, flexible work pilots, and culture-of-belonging metrics—into localized action plans that resonate with each state’s unique labor market and community context.
- • Build transparent feedback loops (pulse surveys, focus groups, stay-interviews) that surface real-time insights, inform continuous improvement, and demonstrate measurable progress toward TNC’s aspiration of being an employer of choice in the environmental sector.
- • Oversee HR operations including compensation benchmarking, benefits administration liaison, HRIS data integrity, and compliance training, ensuring flawless execution while freeing leaders to focus on mission-critical conservation outcomes.
- • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and Program teams to model workforce scenarios that balance budget realities with talent needs, advocating for investments that yield long-term conservation ROI.
- • Represent TNC externally at state-level HR and conservation conferences, sharing best practices and strengthening the organization’s reputation as a forward-thinking, inclusive employer.
- • Champion the organization’s safety culture by ensuring completion of Vehicle Use Agreements, driver-record reviews, and alignment with the Auto Safety Program for all field-based staff.
- • Travel up to 20 %—both domestically and occasionally internationally—to conduct site visits, facilitate team retreats, and build relationships with remote staff who safeguard rivers, forests, and coastlines.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 8 years of progressive HR leadership experience covering talent management, employee relations, training & development, organizational development, and recruiting.
- • Demonstrated success leading and developing a multi-level HR team in a decentralized, multi-state, or international organization.
- • Advanced knowledge of U.S. employment law and proven ability to manage complex employee-relations cases with empathy and compliance.
- • Experience integrating global or enterprise-wide HR strategies into local contexts while honoring cultural nuances and regional labor markets.
- • Valid U.S. driver’s license and willingness to travel up to 20 % within the Southern Division and occasionally abroad.
