Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As the Engineering Manager for Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) Infrastructure at OpenAI, you will lead a newly formed team that acts as a force multiplier for customer-facing deployment pods, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure for single-tenant applications across both OpenAI-hosted and customer-hosted environments.
- • You will operate as a player-coach, combining hands-on technical leadership with people management to build reusable infrastructure patterns, guide deployment strategy, and uphold high standards in security, reliability, and operational excellence while partnering closely with product, research, and go-to-market teams.
- • The FDE Infra team sits at the critical intersection of engineering, product, and customer outcomes, transforming real-world deployment feedback into durable product improvements and standardized, secure infrastructure baselines that accelerate innovation across OpenAI’s AI product suite.
- • You will partner with customer-tagged FDE pods to identify infrastructure pain points, translate them into shared modules and runbooks, and drive alignment with OpenAI’s core infrastructure, Security, Privacy, and AppSec teams to ensure compliance without sacrificing agility.
- • In this role, you will build the FDE Infra function from the ground up — defining the operating model, hiring plan, technical roadmap, and team culture — while making disciplined tradeoffs between standardization and customization to maximize leverage and minimize toil across complex deployments.
- • You will own end-to-end infrastructure concerns including provisioning, networking, identity and authentication (IAM), deployment workflows (CI/CD), observability, vulnerability management, and customer connectivity, stepping in directly during complex escalations to ensure successful outcomes.
- • By guiding deployment strategy and influencing pod-level decisions, you will help determine when to adopt OpenAI-hosted standards versus when to adapt for customer-specific constraints, always prioritizing security, reliability, and operational simplicity.
- • You will foster a culture of technical excellence and inclusion, mentoring engineers through direct involvement in architecture reviews, code reviews, and incident response, while developing hiring plans and growth paths that attract and retain top infrastructure talent.
- • Through close collaboration with security and compliance stakeholders, you will ensure that all deployments meet internal and external regulatory expectations, turning security and privacy requirements into enabling infrastructure patterns rather than bottlenecks.
- • Your leadership will directly impact the speed and reliability with which OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI capabilities are delivered to enterprise customers, making you a key enabler of trust, scalability, and real-world impact in high-stakes environments.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years of engineering experience with 2+ years managing strong individual contributors in infrastructure, platform, reliability, or security-heavy systems.
- • Deep hands-on expertise in cloud environments, infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi), networking, deployment systems, observability, and identity and authentication patterns.
- • Proven 0→1 experience building reusable capabilities under ambiguity, with the ability to make disciplined standardization-versus-customization decisions instead of defaulting to bespoke solutions.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work model (3 days in office per week) with flexibility across San Francisco, New York City, or London offices.
- • Relocation assistance provided for eligible candidates.
- • Opportunity to shape foundational infrastructure for AI deployment at the forefront of technological innovation.
