  • • Join The Ohio State University's College of Public Health as an Instructional Design Specialist 1, a pivotal role focused on enhancing the accessibility and quality of online and hybrid courses.
  • • In this remote position, you will work under the guidance of the Instructional Design Coordinator, playing a crucial role in digital accessibility remediation, supporting course development, and ensuring the quality assurance of educational content.
  • • This role acts as a vital link between student support roles and more senior instructional design and accessibility positions, taking ownership of specific tasks such as document formatting, accessibility checks, and updating learning modules.
  • • Your primary objective will be to ensure courses are prepared on schedule, adhering to college standards, accessibility expectations, and best practices in instructional design, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and effective learning environment.
  • • You will be instrumental in supporting instructor readiness, standardizing course materials for consistency and accessibility, and ensuring compliance with critical standards like ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 A/AA.
  • • Success in this role will be measured by the timely launch of courses, a reduction in rework, and the consistent application of high accessibility and quality standards across all course materials.
  • • 70% Digital Accessibility Support and Remediation:
  • • Apply fundamental accessibility practices to a variety of digital materials, including documents, presentations, CarmenCanvas pages, and multimedia content. This involves ensuring proper use of headings, lists, alt text for images, descriptive link text, and maintaining adequate color contrast.
  • • Conduct initial accessibility checks using both automated tools and manual review processes to identify potential issues within online course content.
  • • Escalate complex accessibility challenges to senior staff while managing the remediation of identified issues within your scope.
  • • Prepare and verify accurate captions and transcripts for video content, ensuring that all learners can access auditory information.
  • • Assist in the accessible formatting of documents, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and PDF files, ensuring they meet accessibility standards.
  • • Convert or reformat existing instructional materials into accessible templates, meticulously tracking remediation tasks to ensure completion.
  • • Support the college's overarching commitment to compliance with ADA Title II and WCAG 2.1 A/AA guidelines, operating under the direction of experienced instructional design professionals.
  • • 20% Instructional Design and Course Build Support:
  • • Build and update course modules, pages, assignments, and assessments within the CarmenCanvas learning management system, strictly following established templates and specifications.
  • • Assist in the preparation of basic media and learning assets, which may include light video editing and file optimization for web delivery.
  • • Perform comprehensive checks for course readability, navigation clarity, and broken links as part of the course readiness review cycles.
  • • Ensure that course content is logically structured and easy for students to navigate.
  • • 5% Faculty Support, Communication and Project Coordination:
  • • Execute assigned tasks efficiently and effectively, adhering to established procedures and project scopes.
  • • Communicate professionally with instructors and team members regarding routine matters, such as requesting necessary files, confirming content updates, or providing task status reports.
  • • Maintain organized task lists and diligently document progress on assigned projects under the supervision of the Instructional Design Coordinator.
  • • Assist in making simple, procedural updates to internal guides, templates, or checklists as directed by the team.
  • • 5% Other Duties:
  • • Undertake other duties as assigned to support departmental projects and ensure the smooth operation of the instructional design team.
