- • Estimate and model comprehensive mine closure costs for active and legacy mining projects across Canada, including capital and operational expenditures for decommissioning, reclamation, water treatment, and long-term stewardship.
- • Develop detailed cost estimates using industry-standard software and methodologies, incorporating site-specific geotechnical, hydrogeological, and environmental data provided by project teams.
- • Collaborate with environmental engineers, geologists, and regulatory specialists to ensure closure cost estimates align with provincial and federal regulatory requirements, including mine closure plans submitted to regulatory authorities.
- • Prepare and update financial models for mine closure liabilities, including discounted cash flow analyses, inflation adjustments, and contingency planning based on project timelines and risk assessments.
- • Review and validate closure cost estimates prepared by junior staff, providing technical guidance and quality assurance to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry best practices.
- • Support permitting and regulatory submissions by preparing technical documentation, cost justifications, and financial assurance packages required by provincial mining ministries and federal agencies.
- • Participate in client meetings and site visits to gather site-specific data, understand operational constraints, and communicate closure cost assumptions and risks to stakeholders.
- • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving regulatory frameworks, environmental standards, and cost estimation benchmarks for mine closure across Canadian jurisdictions.
- • Integrate historical closure project data and lessons learned into cost estimation templates and databases to improve accuracy and efficiency across future projects.
- • Work closely with project managers to align closure cost estimates with overall project budgets, schedules, and risk management plans.
- • Contribute to proposal development by providing cost estimation inputs for new business opportunities in mine closure, remediation, and reclamation services.
- • Document all assumptions, data sources, and calculation methodologies used in cost estimates to ensure auditability and transparency for clients and regulators.
- • Support internal training initiatives by sharing expertise on closure cost estimation techniques with team members and new hires.
- • Maintain strict confidentiality and data integrity when handling sensitive client financial and environmental data.
- • Adapt estimation approaches for diverse mine types including open-pit, underground, oil sands, and legacy sites, accounting for varying environmental conditions and regulatory expectations.
- • Coordinate with external consultants, contractors, and third-party auditors to validate cost estimates and ensure alignment with industry standards such as CIM Best Practices and NI 43-101.
🎯 Requirements
- • Minimum 5 years of experience in mine closure cost estimation or related environmental engineering roles in the mining industry
- • Proven ability to develop and validate detailed mine closure cost models using software such as Primavera, Costimator, or similar tools
- • In-depth knowledge of Canadian mining regulations, closure requirements, and financial assurance frameworks across provincial jurisdictions
- • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geology, or related field
- • Experience preparing regulatory submissions for mine closure plans and financial assurances
- • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
