  • • The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is actively seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Editorial Intern for the Summer 2026 program. This internship offers an exceptional opportunity for students enrolled in accredited undergraduate or graduate programs to gain hands-on experience in the field of public interest journalism and advocacy. If you possess a strong academic record, exceptional writing abilities, and a deep-seated commitment to advancing social justice through impactful storytelling, this role is designed for you.
  • • As a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, the SPLC works collaboratively with communities to dismantle white supremacy, foster intersectional movements, and champion the human rights of all individuals. This internship provides a unique chance to contribute to an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that is committed to reducing bigotry and oppression through rigorous research, public education, community outreach, strategic litigation, and persistent advocacy.
  • • The ideal candidate will demonstrate a profound passion for civil rights and social justice issues, translating this passion into compelling narratives and clear, accessible communication. You should possess a natural curiosity, a meticulous attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to accuracy in your research and reporting.
  • • We are looking for a proactive and organized individual who can work both independently and collaboratively within the Editorial team. Your ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines will be crucial to your success in this role. Strong typography skills are also a valuable asset.
  • • You will play a vital role in supporting the Editorial team by drafting a variety of internal and external written content. This includes reporting and writing for diverse projects, contributing to the SPLC's website, and assisting with the creation of printed materials. Your work will directly contribute to the SPLC's mission of educating the public and advocating for change.
  • • A key aspect of this internship is upholding the SPLC's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles. This involves actively seeking out and collaborating with diverse individuals and organizations, ensuring that their contributions are authentic, impactful, and aligned with the Center's shared mission, vision, and values, as well as the department's specific goals.
  • • This position is ideal for someone eager to learn and grow in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. You will have the opportunity to hone your writing and editing skills while contributing to meaningful work that has a tangible impact on society. The internship is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the day-to-day operations of a leading civil rights organization.
  • • The SPLC values a collaborative spirit. You will be encouraged to share your ideas, ask questions, and contribute to team discussions. While independent work is expected, the support and guidance of experienced editorial professionals will be readily available. This internship is more than just a learning opportunity; it's a chance to be part of a team dedicated to creating a more just and equitable world.
  • • Interns are expected to begin on June 1, 2026, with a minimum commitment of ten consecutive weeks. The SPLC unfortunately cannot accommodate split summer schedules. This role offers a competitive hourly wage of $17.95, with potential for supervisor-approved overtime, and operates on a 40-hour work week.
  • • The internship is designated as 'Remote Local,' meaning you will work remotely but may be required to attend work-related activities at SPLC offices or within the states where the SPLC operates. This provides flexibility while ensuring engagement with the organization's physical presence and operational areas.
  • • This position is performed under general office conditions and does not involve strenuous physical demands or exposure to dangerous situations. The SPLC is an equal-opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, considering applicants equally regardless of various protected characteristics.
  • • To apply, candidates must submit a resume, transcript, and cover letter by 5:00 pm CST on Monday, February 23, 2026. This is a critical deadline, and late applications cannot be considered.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Currently enrolled in an accredited 4-year journalism, English literature, public relations, or related program, with an expected graduation date after August 2026.
  • • Demonstrated passion for civil rights and social justice issues, evidenced through coursework, volunteer work, or previous experiences.
  • • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt writing style to different audiences and formats.
  • • Strong research skills and a commitment to accuracy and factual reporting.
  • • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a remote or hybrid work environment.
  • • Self-starter with a detail-oriented approach and an awareness of the SPLC's mission, vision, and values.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Paid internship at $17.95 per hour.
  • • Opportunity to work remotely with potential for in-person engagement.
  • • Gain valuable experience in journalism, advocacy, and social justice communications at a nationally recognized nonprofit organization.
  • • Develop professional writing and editing skills through hands-on project work.
  • • Contribute to meaningful work that directly supports civil rights and combats bigotry and oppression.
