  • • The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is actively seeking a highly motivated and passionate Intern for our Intelligence Project, specifically for the Summer 2026 cohort. This internship offers an exceptional opportunity for students and individuals with outstanding research skills and a profound commitment to public interest work to contribute to our vital mission. The SPLC is a renowned catalyst for racial justice, dedicated to dismantling white supremacy, fostering intersectional movements, and advancing the human rights of all people across the South and beyond. As an internationally recognized nonprofit organization, we leverage research, public education, outreach, litigation, and policy advocacy to combat bigotry and oppression.
  • • This role is ideal for someone who is deeply passionate about civil rights and social justice. You will demonstrate a strong interest in researching and analyzing the impact of modern socio-political movements on communities and the prevalence of political violence. Your work will directly support our efforts to produce high-quality research that advances the SPLC's mission. You will be driven to assist our team in conducting critical research aimed at countering white supremacy and hard-right extremism within the United States.
  • • A key aspect of this internship involves being data-driven. You will develop your ability to compile and analyze data in both qualitative and quantitative forms. An interest in collecting, organizing, and dissecting information extracted from open-source intelligence is essential. Furthermore, a genuine alignment with the SPLC's mission, vision, and values is paramount. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to our core principles.
  • • As an Intelligence Project Intern, your primary focus will be on contributing to several key research projects. You will work closely with our experienced Intelligence Project Research team, engaging in in-depth research, writing, and data analysis. Your contributions will be instrumental in shaping our understanding of contemporary extremist movements and their societal impacts.
  • • Key responsibilities include:
  • • Assisting in the drafting of comprehensive research memos, informative fact sheets, and various other written materials that communicate complex findings to diverse audiences.
  • • Diligently monitoring news outlets, academic journals, social media, and other relevant sources to identify and gather information pertinent to the Intelligence Project's research areas.
  • • Identifying and evaluating useful resources, analytical frameworks, and critical information that can enhance the depth and scope of the Intelligence Project's ongoing work.
  • • Collaborating effectively with other members of the Intelligence Project team, fostering a supportive and productive environment to meet ongoing policy research needs.
  • • Upholding the SPLC's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles by actively seeking diverse collaborators and partners who can contribute authentic and impactful work, ensuring their efforts align with the center's shared mission, vision, and values, as well as the department's strategic goals.
  • • This internship is a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge research within the civil rights and social justice sector. You will be part of a dedicated team making a tangible difference in the fight against hate and extremism. The role is fully remote, offering flexibility while requiring dedication to impactful work. Interns are expected to begin on June 1st, 2026, with a minimum commitment of ten consecutive weeks. This position reports to the Manager, Research, and offers a competitive hourly wage of $17.95, with potential for overtime with supervisor approval. We are committed to equitable hiring practices and encourage all qualified individuals passionate about our mission to apply.
