• • Join ION Group’s Milan or Pisa hub for a 6-month, full-time, on-site Data Science Internship and help reinvent how Italy’s commercial retail banks serve millions of customers. You will sit at the intersection of finance, technology and data science, translating messy, real-world banking processes into crisp, quantitative models that power next-generation wealth-management, lending, risk and compliance products.
• • Own end-to-end business-process analyses: map the AS-IS state of Italian retail banks through stakeholder interviews, shadowing sessions and document archaeology; convert qualitative pain points into structured data sets; quantify cost, risk and time leakage; build interactive Power BI dashboards that let executives “feel” the inefficiencies before they read about them.
• • Experiment with Python (pandas, pyspark, sklearn) to mine loan-origination logs, KYC checks, AML alerts and portfolio-rebalancing tickets; prototype predictive models that flag manual bottlenecks or predict regulatory breaches; benchmark model outputs against industry literature and ECB guidelines.
• • Translate quantitative insights into a TO-BE product roadmap: size addressable markets, estimate ROI of automation, define MVP features and write Jira stories that engineering can pick up the next sprint; present findings to C-level client committees and ION product boards, defending assumptions with data and visual story-telling.
• • Package everything into client-grade deliverables: executive one-pagers, technical appendices, annotated Jupyter notebooks and reproducible Power BI templates that survive due-diligence audits; maintain a living Confluence playbook so future interns can stand on your shoulders.
• • Collaborate with a cross-functional squad of quantitative analysts, UX researchers, product owners and regulatory lawyers; participate in daily stand-ups, weekly design sprints and monthly “demo-days” where your prototype could become a funded venture.
• • Learn cutting-edge skills: advanced data wrangling at scale with Spark on Azure Databricks, statistical process-control, Monte-Carlo cash-flow simulation, regulatory NLP and explainable-AI techniques; receive mentorship from ION’s lead data scientists who built the pricing engines used by 80 % of European investment banks.
• • Contribute to ION’s knowledge capital: publish internal white-papers, speak at university meet-ups, and leave behind a Git repo that shortens the next project’s kick-off from weeks to days; top performers are fast-tracked into ION’s two-year Graduate Data Science Programme with international rotations.
