As a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, the SPLC works in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing bigotry and oppression through outreach, public education, litigation, and policy advocacy. The Investigator plays a pivotal role in supporting our esteemed attorneys and litigation teams by conducting thorough investigations into cases at various stages of litigation. This position is critical to building strong legal arguments, uncovering crucial evidence, and ensuring justice for the marginalized and oppressed communities we serve.
- • In this dynamic role, you will be instrumental in the fact-finding process, meticulously gathering information that forms the bedrock of our legal strategies. Your responsibilities will extend to working closely with attorneys to identify, locate, interview, and maintain consistent and meaningful contact with clients, potential clients, and witnesses. This requires a high degree of empathy, discretion, and professionalism, as you will often be the first point of contact and a trusted liaison between our legal team and the individuals impacted by injustice.
- • You will be tasked with developing and executing comprehensive investigative plans tailored to the specific needs of each case. This includes identifying key individuals, potential sources of information, and relevant documents or records. Your ability to think critically and strategically will be essential in anticipating challenges and developing creative solutions to overcome them. You will conduct background checks, research public records, and utilize various databases and online resources to gather intelligence and verify information.
- • A significant aspect of the Investigator's role involves conducting interviews with a diverse range of individuals, including victims, witnesses, experts, and sometimes even opposing parties. This requires exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening abilities, and the capacity to build rapport and trust quickly. You must be adept at asking probing questions, eliciting detailed and accurate information, and documenting interviews meticulously. Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical guidelines are paramount in all interactions.
- • You will be responsible for analyzing and synthesizing complex information from various sources, identifying patterns, inconsistencies, and key themes. Your findings will be presented in clear, concise, and well-organized reports, providing attorneys with the essential information they need to build compelling cases. This includes summarizing interview notes, detailing research findings, and highlighting critical evidence. You will collaborate closely with litigation teams, offering insights and recommendations based on your investigative work.
- • The Investigator will also play a role in identifying and locating potential clients who may have experienced civil rights violations. This proactive outreach requires an understanding of the communities we serve and the ability to connect with individuals who may be hesitant to come forward. You will assist in the intake process, ensuring that potential clients feel heard, supported, and informed about their legal options.
- • Furthermore, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate and organized case files, ensuring that all investigative materials are properly documented, secured, and accessible to the legal team. This includes managing evidence, tracking deadlines, and ensuring compliance with all relevant legal procedures and protocols.
- • This role demands a high level of autonomy and self-direction, as you will often be working remotely and managing your own caseload. You must be a proactive problem-solver, capable of working independently while also being an effective team player. Your ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple investigations simultaneously will be crucial for success.
- • The SPLC is committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and impact. As an Investigator, you will be an integral part of a team dedicated to fighting for justice and creating a more equitable society. Your work will directly contribute to holding powerful institutions accountable and empowering communities to advocate for their rights. This is more than just a job; it's an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals and to advance the cause of civil rights.
- • We are looking for individuals who are passionate about our mission, possess a strong sense of integrity, and are committed to upholding the highest ethical standards in their investigative work. If you are a detail-oriented, resourceful, and compassionate individual with a knack for uncovering the truth, we encourage you to apply and become a vital part of our ongoing fight for justice.
