Full Job Description

šŸ“‹ Description

  • • Join the team that keeps Aerospike—the sub-millisecond, petabyte-scale, real-time database—at the bleeding edge of performance. As a Java Developer focused on Performance Benchmarking, you will own the design, implementation, and continuous evolution of the Java client-side tooling that measures how fast, how consistent, and how cost-efficient Aerospike truly is.
  • • Architect and maintain the flagship Java benchmarking suite (Aerospike Benchmark Tool, or ASBench) that is downloaded thousands of times per month by prospects, customers, and the open-source community. Your code will be the first thing a Fortune-100 architect runs when evaluating whether Aerospike can replace Cassandra, DynamoDB, or Redis at one-tenth the cost.
  • • Instrument every layer of the stack—from JVM garbage-collection metrics to NIC-level packet capture—to produce reproducible, statistically rigorous latency, throughput, and TCO reports. You will decide what to measure, how to measure it, and how to visualize it so that a non-expert can understand why Aerospike wins.
  • • Collaborate daily with distributed systems engineers who hack the C kernel, site reliability engineers who run 5 9’s clusters, and field CTOs who present your results on stage at AWS re:Invent. Your benchmarks often become the backbone of those talks.
  • • Continuously profile and optimize the Java client itself (async NIO, Netty, Project Loom) so that the act of measuring does not distort the measurement. Expect to chase nanoseconds the way others chase milliseconds.
  • • Build deterministic load generators that simulate real-world patterns—time-series ingestion at 10 M TPS, fraud-detection bursts, ML feature-store reads—across bare metal, Kubernetes, and serverless environments. You will containerize, parameterize, and automate these scenarios in GitHub Actions so every nightly build proves we are still the fastest.
  • • Create CI pipelines that fail the build if a regression >1 % appears in P99 latency, memory footprint, or cloud cost. You will define the SLOs that guard the product.
  • • Publish your findings in technical blogs, white papers, and peer-reviewed conference submissions (VLDB, SIGMOD, QCon). Aerospike will sponsor your travel and give you a global stage.
  • • Mentor junior engineers and university interns who want to learn how real-world performance engineering is done. You will run internal ā€œLatency 101ā€ workshops and review pull requests with empathy and precision.
  • • Contribute upstream to open-source projects (HdrHistogram, async-profiler, JMH) so the entire Java ecosystem benefits from your innovations.
  • • Work 100 % remote from any timezone that overlaps at least four hours with Pacific (UTC-8/āˆ’7). We communicate in Slack, document in Notion, and deploy to AWS, GCP, and Azure daily.

šŸŽÆ Requirements

  • • 5+ years of production-grade Java development (Java 11–21) with deep expertise in the concurrency, garbage-collection, and JIT internals that affect latency.
  • • Proven track record of authoring or maintaining high-throughput benchmarking tools (JMH, YCSB, TPC-C, or similar) and statistically analyzing the results.
  • • Hands-on experience with distributed databases or key-value stores; you can explain why P99 matters more than average latency and how to reduce tail latency.
  • • Proficiency with Linux performance tooling (perf, eBPF, async-profiler, FlameGraphs) and cloud cost modeling (AWS Cost Explorer, GCP Pricing Calculator).
  • • Nice-to-have: contributions to open-source Java projects, publications or talks on performance engineering, and familiarity with Kubernetes operators or Terraform.

šŸ–ļø Benefits

  • • Fully remote culture with quarterly in-person engineering summits in destinations like Lisbon, Vancouver, or Tokyo—flights and accommodation covered.
  • • Competitive salary plus equity in a high-growth, profitable database company whose valuation has tripled in the last three years.
  • • Annual $3,000 professional-development stipend for conferences, courses, or hardware; many teammates use it for Threadripper rigs or Apple M3 Max laptops.
  • • Platinum-level health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents, plus a $1,200 yearly wellness allowance that can cover gym memberships, ergonomic chairs, or VR headsets.
