đź“‹ Description
- • The Koch Internship Program (KIP), a paid, 12-week experiential learning initiative managed by Stand Together Fellowships, provides invaluable work experience at non-profit organizations across the United States. These organizations are dedicated to addressing some of the nation's most significant challenges. This program is designed for individuals who are geographically located within the U.S. and are authorized to work in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship.
- • As a Data Analysis Intern with Open the Books, you will play a crucial role in uncovering and highlighting instances of government waste, fraud, and abuse. You will leverage Open the Books' extensive proprietary database, which contains over 10 billion data points on public spending at federal, state, and local levels. This includes comprehensive data on federal salaries, line-by-line federal expenditures, all 50 state "checkbooks," millions of state-level salaries and pension funds, and spending across more than 17,000 municipalities.
- • Your primary responsibility will be to brainstorm and develop innovative research projects that utilize this vast dataset to craft compelling narratives about government inefficiency and mismanagement. You will be encouraged to explore creative data comparisons that can significantly influence public discourse and policy discussions surrounding wasteful spending.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the mission of Open the Books, a project of American Transparency, which is committed to fighting for real-time spending transparency. The organization firmly believes that transparency is a fundamental building block of representative government, essential for safeguarding all other freedoms.
- • You will work closely with a team of watchdog journalists, contributing to their efforts to hold government accountable. The ideal candidate will possess a keen interest in quantitative research and a strong awareness of current events, enabling them to identify timely and impactful research avenues.
- • The internship involves delving into complex datasets, identifying trends, and translating raw data into accessible and impactful stories. This could involve analyzing spending patterns, comparing budgets across different entities, or investigating specific areas of government expenditure that warrant closer scrutiny.
- • You will gain hands-on experience in data analysis techniques, research methodologies, and the art of data-driven storytelling. The insights you generate will be instrumental in educating the public and advocating for greater accountability in public finances.
- • The program includes a robust professional development component, featuring a 2-day in-person summit at Stand Together's Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia (June 3-4, 2026). Additionally, virtual programming will occur every other Thursday between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM ET, focusing on three key objectives: understanding the foundational principles of a free society (individual liberty, limited government, free markets, rule of law), learning the Stand Together community's vision for change and principled problem-solving, and exploring career pathways that advance liberty and free society.
- • Interns will receive a stipend of either $7,500 (full-time, 32 hours/week) or $5,500 (part-time, 24 hours/week) from Stand Together Fellowships, making this a paid opportunity to gain significant professional experience.
- • This is a full-time, fully remote position, offering flexibility while demanding dedication to the project's goals. You will be expected to be available for all virtual professional development sessions and the mandatory in-person summit.
- • The ultimate goal of Open the Books is to capture every public dollar spent and make it accessible online in near real-time. Your work as a Data Analysis Intern will directly contribute to this ambitious mission, empowering journalists, researchers, activists, public officials, and every American taxpayer with the information they need to understand and influence public spending.
- • Successful candidates will undergo interviews with both the partner organization (Open the Books) and Stand Together Fellowships staff, underscoring the collaborative nature of the program.
- • This internship is an exceptional chance to develop critical analytical skills, gain exposure to impactful investigative journalism, and contribute to a cause that promotes transparency and accountability in government. You will be part of a movement dedicated to ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and effectively.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong interest in quantitative research, data analysis, and uncovering insights from large datasets.
- • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in data.
- • Proficiency in data manipulation and analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Python, R) is a strong plus.
- • Keen interest in public spending, government accountability, transparency, and current events.
- • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear, compelling narratives.
- • Must be geographically located within the U.S. and authorized to work in the U.S. for the duration of the program.
- • Must be available for all virtual professional development sessions (every other Thursday, 1-4 PM ET) and the in-person summit in Arlington, VA (June 3-4, 2026).
🏖️ Benefits
- • Paid internship with a stipend of $7,500 (full-time) or $5,500 (part-time).
- • 12-week experiential learning program offering meaningful work experience.
- • Professional development opportunities, including a 2-day in-person summit and virtual programming.
- • Exposure to investigative journalism and data-driven advocacy.
- • Opportunity to contribute to a mission focused on government transparency and accountability.
- • Fully remote work arrangement with flexibility.
